The Matrix

The Matrix is a 1999 American science fiction action film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, and Hugo Weaving, and was first released in the United States on March 31, 1999.Sony VAIO PCG-3B1M Battery The success of the film led to the release of two feature film sequels, and the Matrixfranchise was further expanded through the production of comic books, video games, and animated short films. Sony VAIO PCG-3C1T Battery The film depicts a future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality or cyberspacecreated by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Upon learning this, computer programmer "Neo" is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, involving other people who have been freed from the "dream world" and into reality. Sony VAIO PCG-3D1M Battery The film contains many references to the cyberpunk and hacker subcultures; philosophical and religious ideas such as René Descartes' evil genius, the Allegory of the Cave, the brain-in-a-vat thought experiment; and homages to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Metropolis, Sony VAIO PCG-3G2M Battery Hong Kong action cinema, spaghetti westerns, dystopian fiction, M. C. Escher's work,[2] and Japanese animation. Computer programmer Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is secretly a hacker known as "Neo". Sony VAIO PCG-5R1M Battery He is restless, eager and driven to learn the meaning of cryptic references to the "Matrix" appearing on his computer. A female hacker named Trinity(Carrie-Anne Moss) confirms that a man named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) can help him; however, three sinister Agents, led by Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), arrest Neo and attempt to prevent him from collaborating with Morpheus. Sony VAIO PCG-7141M Battery Undeterred, Neo meets with Morpheus and agrees to follow him by swallowing an offered red pill. Neo abruptly awakens in a liquid-filled vessel, connected along with thousands of other people to an elaborate electrical structure. He is rescued by Morpheus and brought aboard a levitating ship called the Nebuchadnezzar. Sony VAIO PCG-7143M Battery Morpheus tells Neo that humans are fighting against intelligent machines that were created early in the 21st century and have since taken control of the Earth's surface. The machines harvest the bioelectrical energy of humans, who are kept docile within the "Matrix" – a simulation of the world as it was in 1999. Sony VAIO PCG-7151M Battery Neo has lived in this simulated world since birth; in reality, the year is closer to 2199. Morpheus and his crew belong to a group of free humans who "unplug" others from the Matrix and recruit them to their rebellion against the Machines, Sony VAIO PCG-7154M Battery and who are able to gain superhuman abilities within the Matrix by using their understanding of its true nature to manipulate its physical laws. Neo is warned that fatal injuries within the Matrix will also kill one's physical body, and that the Agents he previously met are powerful sentient computer programs that eliminate human threats to the system. Sony VAIO PCG-7162M Battery Morpheus believes that Neo is "the One", a man prophesied to end the war. The group enters the Matrix to visit the Oracle (Gloria Foster), who predicted the emergence of the One. The Oracle implies that Neo is not the One, but warns that Neo must soon choose between his life and that of Morpheus. Sony VAIO PCG-7181M Battery The group is ambushed by Agents and tactical police, leading to the death of the crew member Mouse (Matt Doran). Morpheus allows himself to be captured to let Neo and the crew escape. Their ally Cypher (Joe Pantoliano) had betrayed them, making a deal for a permanent return to the comfortable life of the Matrix in exchange for giving Morpheus to the Agents. Sony VAIO PCG-41112M Battery Cypher murders crew members Switch, Apoc, and Dozer before he is killed by Dozer's younger brother Tank (Marcus Chong). The Agents drug and interrogate Morpheus in an attempt to learn his access codes to the mainframe computer in Zion, the humans' subterranean refuge in the real world. Sony VAIO PCG-7153M Battery Neo and Trinity return to the Matrix and rescue their leader; in the process, Neo becomes more confident in his ability to manipulate the Matrix, and is ultimately able to dodge bullets fired at him. Morpheus and Trinity use a telephone to exit the Matrix, but Neo is ambushed by Agent Smith.Sony VAIO PCG-71312M Battery He stands his ground and defeats Smith, but flees when the Agent possesses another body. Meanwhile, in the real world "sentinel" machines converge on the Nebuchadnezzar. Just before reaching another exit, Neo is shot and killed by Agent Smith. Sony VAIO PCG-7144M Battery Trinity, who is standing over Neo in the real world, whispers that the Oracle told her she would fall in love with the One. She kisses Neo and restores his life. Neo revives with new power to perceive and control the Matrix, and effortlessly destroys Agent Smith, before returning to the real world in time for the ship's EMP weapon to destroy the attacking sentinels. Sony VAIO PCG-7191L Battery The film ends with Neo back in the Matrix, making a telephone call promising that he will demonstrate to the people imprisoned in the Matrix that "anything is possible." He hangs up the phone and flies into the sky. The Matrix was a co-production of Warner Bros. and Australian Village Roadshow Pictures, Sony VAIO PCG-3C1M Battery and all but a few scenes were filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia, and in the city itself. Recognizable landmarks were not included in order to maintain the setting of a generic American city.[8] Nevertheless, theSydney Harbour Bridge, ANZAC Bridge, University of Technology, Sydney, Sony VAIO PCG-3F1M Battery AWA Tower, Martin Place and a Commonwealth Bank branch are visible in some shots, as is signage on buildings for the Sydney offices of MMI Insurance (now Allianz), AON, Citigroup, Telstra, Westpac, KPMG, Ernst & Young and IBM Corporation among others. Sony VAIO PCG-3H1M Battery Other clues to the filming location include left-hand traffic flow and signs featuring Australian English terminology and spellings such as "lift" and "authorised" (rather than the American English "elevator" and "authorized"). Subtle nods were included to Chicago, Illinois, the home city of the directors, Sony VAIO PCG-3J1M Battery through a subtly placed picture of the Chicago skyline, city maps, the destination of the subway train during the subway station fight between Neo and Agent Smith saying "Loop", and the names of streets: Wells, Lake, Franklin, Erie, State, Balbo, Wabash, Adams. Sony VAIO PCG-8141M Battery The rooftop set that Trinity uses to escape from Agent Jones early in the film was left over from the production of Dark City, which has been remarked upon due to the thematic similarities of the films.[9] According to The Art of the Matrix, at least one filmed scene and a variety of short pieces of action were omitted from the final cut, and have (to date)[when?] not been published. Sony VAIO PCG-8161M Battery The Wachowskis were keen that all involved understood the thematic background of the movie. For example, the book used to conceal disks early in the movie, Simulacra and Simulation, a 1981 work by the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard, was required reading for most of the principal cast and crew. Sony VAIO PCG-3C2M Battery Comic book artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce worked on The Matrix as concept and storyboard artists respectively. In the film, the code that comprises the Matrix itself is frequently represented as downward-flowing green characters. Sony VAIO PCG-5N2M Battery This code includes mirror images of half-width kana characters and Western Latin letters and numerals. Generally, the film's production design placed a bias towards its distinctive green color for scenes set within the Matrix, whereas there is an emphasis on the color blue during the scenes set in the real world. Sony VAIO PCG-5P1M Battery In addition, grid-patterns were incorporated into the sets for scenes inside the Matrix, intended to convey the cold, logical and artificial nature of that environment.[10] The "digital rain" is strongly reminiscent of similar computer code in the film Ghost in the Shell, an acknowledged influence on the Matrix series (see below). Sony VAIO PCG-5S1M Battery The color green reflects the green tint commonly used on early monochrome computer monitors. As for artistic inspiration for bullet time, I would credit Otomo Katsuhiro, who co-wrote and directed Akira, which definitely blew me away, along with director Michel Gondry. Sony VAIO PCG-9Z1M Battery His music videos experimented with a different type of technique called view-morphing and it was just part of the beginning of uncovering the creative approaches toward using still cameras for special effects. Our technique was significantly different because we built it to move around objects that were themselves in motion, Sony VAIO PCG-7171M Battery and we were also able to create slow-motion events that 'virtual cameras' could move around – rather than the static action in Gondry's music videos with limited camera moves. The film is known for popularizing the use of a visual effect known as "bullet time", which allows the viewer to explore a moment progressing in slow-motion as the camera appears to orbit around the scene at normal speed.[12] Sony VAIO PCG-7186M Battery The method used for creating these effects involved a technically expanded version of an old art photography technique known as time-slice photography, in which a large number of cameras are placed around an object and triggered nearly simultaneously.[12] Each camera is a still-picture camera, Sony VAIO PCG-81112M Battery and not a motion picture camera, and it contributes just one frame to the video sequence. When the sequence of shots is viewed as in a movie, the viewer sees what are in effect two-dimensional "slices" of a three-dimensional moment. Watching such a "time slice" movie is akin to the real-life experience of walking around a statue to see how it looks from different angles. Sony VAIO PCG-31311M Battery The positioning of the still cameras can be varied along any desired smooth curve to produce a smooth looking camera motion in the finished clip, and the timing of each camera's firing may be delayed slightly,[12] so that a motion scene can be executed (albeit over a very short period of real time). Sony VAIO PCG-8152M Battery Some scenes in The Matrix feature the "time-slice" effect with completely frozen characters and objects. Film interpolation techniques improved the fluidity of the apparent "camera motion". The effect was further expanded upon by the Wachowskis and the visual effects supervisor John Gaeta so as to create "bullet time", which incorporates temporal motion, Sony VAIO PCG-31111M Battery so that rather than being totally frozen the scene progresses in slow and variable motion.[12] Engineers at Manex Visual Effects pioneered 3-D visualization planning methods to move beyond mechanically fixed views towards more complicated camera paths and flexibly moving interest points. Sony VAIO PCG-61111M Battery There is also an improved fluidity through the use of non-linear interpolation, digital compositing, and the introduction of computer generated "virtual" scenery. The objective of the bullet time shots in The Matrix was to creatively illustrate "mind over matter" type events as captured by a "virtual camera". Sony VAIO PCG-51112M Battery However, the original technical approach was physically bound to pre-determined perspectives, and the resulting effect only suggests the capabilities of a true virtual camera. The evolution of photogrametric and image-based computer-generated background approaches in The Matrix's bullet time shotsSony VAIO PCG-51211M Battery set the stage for later innovations unveiled in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Virtual Cinematography (CGI-rendered characters, locations, and events) and the high-definition "Universal Capture" process completely replaced the use of still camera arrays, thus more closely realizing the "virtual camera".Sony VAIO PCG-51212M Battery Manex Visual Effects used a cluster farm running the Unix-like operating system FreeBSD to render many of the film's visual effects. The film's score was composed by Don Davis. He noted that mirrors appear frequently in the movie: reflections of the blue and red pills are seen in Morpheus's glasses; Sony VAIO PCG-41111M Battery Neo's capture by Agents is viewed through the rear-view mirror of Trinity's Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle; Neo observes a broken mirror mending itself; reflections warp as a spoon is bent; the reflection of a helicopter is visible as it approaches a skyscraper. Sony VAIO PCG-41111V Battery (The film also frequently references the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which has a sequel entitled Through the Looking-Glass.) Davis focused on this theme of reflections when creating his score, alternating between sections of the orchestra and attempting to incorporate contrapuntal ideas.[15] Sony VAIO PCG-61412V Battery In addition to Davis' score, The Matrix soundtrack also features music from acts such as Rammstein, Rob Dougan, Rage Against the Machine, Propellerheads,Ministry, Deftones, Monster Magnet, The Prodigy, Rob Zombie, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Marilyn Manson. Sony VAIO PCG-71112M Battery Other pieces from artists such as Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, and Massive Attack are included in the film, but not featured on the soundtrack. Even if The Matrix is a hybrid and may contain much more than any genre name could describe, it belongs to the epic genre, as, in modern terms, it redefines the hero who sets out to suppress overt threats to humanity. Sony VAIO PCG-81111V Battery The movie makes numerous references to recent films and literature, and to historical myths, religions and philosophies. The Matrix's premise resembles the Ancient Greek aphorism "know thyself",[20] Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the Christian doctrine of theTrinity,[21] Calderón de la Barca's Life is a DreamSony VAIO PCG-81111V Battery René Descartes's evil genius, Kant's reflections on phenomena versus the Ding an sich, Edwin Abbott Abbott's Flatland, George Gurdjieff's The Sleeping Man,[22] and the brain in a vat thought experiment. Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation is featured in the film, and was required reading for the actors.[23] Sony VAIO PCG-81212M Battery However, Baudrillard commented that The Matrixmisunderstands and distorts his work. In Postmodern thought, interpretations of The Matrix often reference Baudrillard's philosophy to demonstrate that the movie is an allegory for contemporary experience in a heavily commercialized, media-driven society, especially of the developed countries. Sony VAIO PCG-81212V Battery The influence of the matrixial theory of Bracha Ettingerarticulated in a series of books and essays from the end of the 1980s onwards was brought to the public's attention through the writings of art historians such as Griselda Pollock[26][27] and film theorists such as Heinz-Peter Schwerfel. Sony VAIO PCG-51111M Battery There are similarities to several works by science fiction author Philip K. Dick,[29][30][31] as well as cyberpunk works such as Neuromancer by William Gibson.[16]The film's use of the term "Matrix" is adopted from Gibson's novel.[32] Japanese director Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell was a strong influence. Sony VAIO VPCS13X9E/B battery Producer Joel Silver has stated that the Wachowskis first described their intentions for The Matrix by showing him that anime and saying, "We wanna do that for real".Mitsuhisa Ishikawa of Production I.G, which produced Ghost in the Shell, noted that the anime's high-quality visuals were a strong source of inspiration for the Wachowskis. Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery He also commented, "... cyberpunk films are very difficult to describe to a third person. I'd imagine that The Matrix is the kind of film that was very difficult to draw up a written proposal for to take to film studios". He stated that since Ghost in the Shell had gained recognition in America, the Wachowskis used it as a "promotional tool".Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery Stanley Kubrick's2001: A Space Odyssey was another science fiction film that helped inspire the visual style of The Matrix.[36] Reviewers have commented on similarities between The Matrix and other late-1990s films such as Strange DaysDark City, and The Truman Show. Sony VAIO VPCF13M8E/B battery Comparisons have also been made to Grant Morrison's comic series The Invisibles; Morrison believes that the Wachowskis essentially plagiarized his work to create the film.Comparisons have also been made between The Matrix and the books of Carlos Castaneda. In addition, the similarity of the film's central concept to a device in the long-running series Doctor Who has also been noted. Sony VAIO VPCF13Z0E/B battery As in the film, the Matrix of that series (introduced in the 1976 serialThe Deadly Assassin) is a massive computer system which one enters using a device connecting to the head, allowing users to see representations of the real world and change its laws of physics; but if killed there, they will die in reality.[43] Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/L battery In 2003 Gothamist.com has suggested that "the Matrix films could be read with a whole new subtext with the news of the [female] dominatrix [companion seen with Larry at film premieres]":[44] Temet Nosce. The Matrix was first released on March 31, 1999. It earned $171 million in North America and over $292 million in foreign box offices, Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/W battery for a total of$463 million worldwide,[1] and later became the first DVD to sell more than three million copies in the US.[45] The Ultimate Matrix Collection was released on HD DVD on May 22, 2007[46] and on Blu-ray on October 14, 2008.[47] The film was also released standalone in a 10th anniversary edition Blu-ray in the Digibook format on March 31, 2009, 10 years to the day after the movie was released theatrically. Sony VAIO VPCF22M1E battery The Matrix received positive reviews from most critics,[49] and is widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.OnMetacritic, it has a consensus forming that it presented an "ingenious" blend of Hong Kong action cinema, innovative visual effects and an imaginative vision.[53] Sony VAIO VPCF11M1E/H battery Rotten Tomatoes reported that 87% of critics gave the film positive reviews, with an average score of 7.4/10, based upon a sample of 129 reviews.[53]At Metacritic, which assigns an average rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 73 upon its DVD release, based on 35 reviews.[49] Sony VAIO VPCF13M0E/B battery Philip Strick commented in Sight & Sound, "if the Wachowskis claim no originality of message, they are startling innovators of method," praising the film's details and its "broadside of astonishing images".[54] Roger Ebert praised the film's visuals and premise, but disliked the third act's focus on action.[37] Sony VAIO VPCYB2M1E battery Similarly, Time Out praised the "entertainingly ingenious" switches between different realities, Hugo Weaving's "engagingly odd" performance, and the film's cinematography and production design, but concluded, "the promising premise is steadily wasted as the film turns into a fairly routine action pic ... yet another slice of overlong, high concept hokum."[55] Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E battery Other reviewers criticised the relative humorlessness and self-indulgence of the movie. In 2001, The Matrix was placed 66th in the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Thrills" list. In 2007, Entertainment Weekly called The Matrix the best science-fiction piece of media for the past 25 years.[59] Sony VAIO VPCY11M1E battery The film is also ranked number 39 on Empire's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time."[60] The Matrix was voted as the fourth best sci-fi film in the 2011 list Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time, based on a poll conducted by ABC and People. Several science fiction creators commented on the film. Sony VAIO VPCS12L9E/B battery Author William Gibson, a key figure in cyberpunk fiction, called the film "an innocent delight I hadn't felt in a long time," and stated, "Neo is my favourite-ever science fiction hero, absolutely."[61] Joss Whedon called the film "my number one" and praised its storytelling, structure and depth, concluding, "It works on whatever level you want to bring to it."[62] Sony VAIO VPCF11S1E/B battery Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky commented, "I walked out ofThe Matrix ... and I was thinking, 'What kind of science fiction movie can people make now?' The Wachowskis basically took all the great sci-fi ideas of the 20th century and rolled them into a delicious pop culture sandwich that everyone on the planet devoured." Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E/R Battery Director M. Night Shyamalan praised the Wachowskis' passion for the film, saying, "Whatever you think of The Matrix, every shot is there because of the passion they have! You can see they argued it out!" The Matrix has had a strong effect on action film-making in Hollywood. Sony VAIO VPCF23P1E Battery It set a new standard for cinematic fight scenes[69] by hiring acclaimed choreographers(such as Yuen Woo-ping) from the Hong Kong action cinema scene, well known for its production of martial arts films. The success of The Matrix put those choreographers and their techniques in high demand by other filmmakers who wanted fights of similar sophistication: Sony VAIO VPCF23N1E Battery for example, wire work was employed in X-Men(2000),[69] and Yuen Woo-ping's brother Yuen Cheung-Yan was choreographer on Daredevil (2003). Following The Matrix, films made abundant use of slow-motion, spinning cameras, and, often, the bullet time effect of a character freezing or slowing down and the camera dollying around them. Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/L Battery The ability to slow down time enough to distinguish the motion of bullets was used as a central gameplay mechanic of several video games, including Max Payne, in which the feature was explicitly referred to as "bullet time"[70] (although the game went into production before the film was released). Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/G battery The Matrix's signature special effect has also been parodied numerous times, in comedy films such as Scary MovieDeuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,Shrek and Kung Pow! Enter the Fist; in animated TV series such as The SimpsonsFairly Oddparents and Family Guy; in the OVA series FLCL; Sony VAIO VPCF24M1E battery and in video games such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, along with a more elaborate parody called Marx Reloaded, in which the central relationship between Neo and Morpheus is represented as an imaginary encounter between Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky. Sony VGP-BPL13 Battery The film's mainstream success led to the making of two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. These were filmed simultaneously during oneshoot and released in two parts in 2003. The first film's introductory tale is succeeded by the story of the impending attack of the human enclave of Zion by a vast machine army. Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery Neo also learns more about the history of the Matrix, his role as the One and the prophecy that he will end the war. The sequels also incorporate longer and more ambitious action scenes, as well as improvements in bullet time and other visual effects. Also released was The Animatrix, a collection of nine animated short films, Sony VGP-BPS13/B Battery many of which were created in the same Japanese animation style that was a strong influence on the live trilogy. The Animatrix was overseen and approved by the Wachowskis who only wrote four of the segments themselves and did not direct any of them; much of the project was developed by notable figures from the world of anime. Sony VGP-BPS13/S Battery Four of the films were originally released on the series' official website; one was shown in cinemas with the Warner Bros. movie Dreamcatcher; the others first appeared with the DVD release of all nine shorts. Several of the films were shown first on UK television prior to their DVD release. Sony VGP-BPS13/S Battery The franchise also contains three video games: Enter the Matrix (2003), which contains footage shot specifically for the game and chronicles events taking place before and during The Matrix ReloadedThe Matrix Online (2004), a MMORPG which continued the story beyond The Matrix Revolutions; Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery and The Matrix: Path of Neo(2005), which focuses on situations based on Neo's journey through the trilogy of films. The Matrix Comics is a series of comics and short stories set in the world of The Matrix, written and illustrated by figures from the comics industry. Sony VGP-BPS13A/S Battery Most of the comics were originally presented for free on the official Matrix website;[71] they were later republished, along with some new material, in two printed trade paperback volumes. The Matrix Reloaded is a 2003 American science fiction action film and the second installment in The Matrixtrilogy, written and directed by the Wachowskis. Sony VGP-BPS13AS Battery It premiered on May 7, 2003, in Westwood, Los Angeles, California, and went on general release by Warner Bros. in North American theaters on May 15, 2003, and around the world during the latter half of that month. It was also screened out of competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.[3] Sony VGP-BPS13B/B Battery The video game Enter the Matrix, which was released on May 15, and a collection of nine animated shorts, The Animatrix, which was released on June 3, supported and expanded the storyline of the movie. The Matrix Revolutions, which completes the story, was released six months after Reloaded, in November 2003. Sony VGP-BPS13B/Q Battery Six months after the events of the first movie, Morpheus receives a message from Captain Niobe of the Logoscalling an emergency meeting of all of Zion's hovercraft. Zion has confirmed the last transmission of the Osiris: an army of Sentinels is tunneling towards Zion and will reach it within 72 hours. Sony VGP-BPS13B/S Battery Commander Lock, the rankingmilitary officer of Zion, orders all ships to return to Zion to prepare for the onslaught. Morpheus asks a ship to remain in order to contact the Oracle, in defiance of Commander Lock's orders. The Caduceus receives a message from the Oracle, and the Nebuchadnezzar ventures out so Neo can contact her. Sony VGP-BPS13Q Battery One of the Caduceus crew, Bane, encounters Agent Smith, who takes over Bane's avatar. Smith then leaves the Matrix, gaining control of Bane's real body. In Zion's temple, Morpheus announces the news of the advancing machines to the people. Sony VGP-BPS13S Battery Neo receives a message from the Oracle and returns to the Matrix to meet her, also meeting her bodyguard Seraph. After realizing that the Oracle is part of the Matrix, Neo asks how he can trust her; she replies that it is his decision. The Oracle explains that she is an exiled program and instructs Neo to reach the Source of the Matrix by finding theKeymaker, Sony VGP-BPL21 Battery a prisoner in the home of the Merovingian. The Keymaker makes keys that can open hidden portals. As the Oracle departs, Smith appears, telling Neo that after being defeated, he knew he was supposed to return to the Source to be deleted, but refused, and is now a rogue program. Sony VGP-BPS21 Battery He demonstrates his ability to clone himself using other people in the Matrix, including other agents, as hosts. He then tries to absorb Neo as a host, but fails, prompting a battle between Neo and Smith's clones. Neo manages to hold his own, but is forced to retreat from the increasingly overwhelming numbers. Sony VGP-BPS21/S Battery Neo, Morpheus and Trinity visit the Merovingian and ask for the Keymaker, but the Merovingian refuses. His wifePersephone, tired of her husband's attitude, betrays him and leads the trio to the Keymaker, allowing one of the Merovingian's henchmen to escape to tell her husband. Sony VGP-BPS21A Battery The Merovingian soon arrives and, while Morpheus, Trinity and the Keymaker escape, Neo fights the Merovingian's supernatural servants. Morpheus and Trinity are trying to escape with the Keymaker on the highway, facing several Agents and The Twins. Ultimately, the Twins are defeated, and Neo flies in to save Morpheus and the Keymaker. Sony VGP-BPS21A/B Battery Zion's remaining ships prepare to battle the machines. Within the Matrix, the crews of the NebuchadnezzarVigilant and Logos help the Keymaker and Neo reach the door to the Source. The crew of the Logos must destroy a power plant in order to prevent a security system from being triggered by the Keymaker's keys, Sony VGP-BPS21B Battery and the crew of the Vigilant must destroy a back-up power station. The Logos is successful, while the Vigilant is bombed by a Sentinel, killing everyone on board. Although Neo requested that Trinity remain on the Nebuchadnezzar, she enters the Matrix to replace the Vigilant crew, and she destroys the backup station. HP Pavilion DV9900 Battery However, her escape is compromised by an agent, and they fight. As Neo, Morpheus and the Keymaker reach the Source through a hallway of shortcuts to other doors in the Matrix, the Smiths appear and try to kill them. Neo prevents the clones from taking over Morpheus, and the Keymaker unlocks the door to the Source, HP Pavilion DV9901TX Battery allowing Neo and Morpheus to escape the Smiths, but the Keymaker is killed. Neo meets a program called the Architect, the Matrix's creator. In the complex conversation that follows, the Architect explains that Neo is part of the design of the Matrix; there were multiple previous versions (five copies according to the Architect) of the Matrix and the One. HP Pavilion DV9903CA Battery Unless Neo returns to the Source to reboot the Matrix (while being allowed to gather a small number of survivors to unplug from the matrix in order to rebuild Zion, essentially restarting the cycle of the Matrix), it will crash, killing everyone connected to it. Combined with Zion's destruction (alongside the lack of new survivors from the resulting system reboot), HP Pavilion DV9904CA Battery this would mean mankind's extinction, and the machines would survive on some lesser energy source. Neo learns of Trinity's situation and chooses to save her instead, as Trinity falls out of a window and is shot by the Agent she is fighting. Neo catches Trinity, but she dies. Unwilling to let her go, Neo uses his powers to remove the bullet and restart her heart. HP Pavilion DV9905EL Battery In the real world, the Nebuchadnezzer is destroyed by Sentinels, and Neo displays a new ability to disable the machines, but collapses and falls into a coma from the effort. The crew are picked up by another ship, The Hammer, where its captain Roland reveals the remaining hovercrafts were wiped out by the machines after someone activated an EMP too early, HP Pavilion DV9907CA Battery with Bane, who has murdered the rest of the Caduceus crew, as the only survivor. The Matrix Reloaded was largely filmed at Fox Studios in Australia, concurrently with filming of the sequel, Revolutions. The freeway chase and "Burly Brawl" scenes were filmed at the decommissioned Naval Air Station Alameda in Alameda, California. HP Pavilion DV9908CA Battery The producers constructed a 1.5-mile freeway on the old runways specifically for the film. Some portions of the chase were also filmed in Oakland, California, and the tunnel shown briefly is the Webster Tube, which connects Oakland and Alameda. Some post-production editing was also done in old aircraft hangars on the base as well. HP Pavilion DV9910CA Battery The city of Akron, Ohio was willing to give full access to Route 59, the stretch of freeway known as the "Innerbelt", for filming of the freeway chase when it was under consideration. However, producers decided against this as "the time to reset all the cars in their start position would take too long".HP Pavilion DV9910EB Battery MythBusterswould later reuse the Alameda location in order to explore the effects of a head-on collision between two semi trucks, and to perform various other experiments. Around 97% of the materials from the sets of the film were recycled after production was completed; for example, tons of wood were sent to Mexico to build low-income housing.[7] HP Pavilion DV9910US Battery Some scenes from the film Baraka by Ron Fricke were selected to represent the real world shown by the wallmonitors in the Architect's room. Don Davis, who composed the music for The Matrix, returned to score Reloaded. For many of the pivotal action sequences, such as the "Burly Brawl", he collaborated with Juno Reactor. HP Pavilion DV9912NR Battery Some of the collaborative cues by Davis and Juno Reactor are extensions of material by Juno Reactor; for example, a version of "Komit" featuring Davis' strings is used during a flying sequence, and "Burly Brawl" is essentially a combination of Davis' unused "Multiple Replication" and a piece similar to Juno Reactor's "Masters of the Universe". HP Pavilion DV9913CL Battery One of the collaborations, "Mona Lisa Overdrive", is titled in reference to the cyberpunk novel of the same name by William Gibson, a major influence on the directors. Leitmotifs established in The Matrix return - such as the Matrix main theme, Neo and Trinity's love theme, the Sentinel's theme, HP Pavilion DV9917CL Battery Neo's flying theme, and a more frequent use of the four-note Agent Smith theme - and others used in Revolutions are established. As with its predecessor, many tracks by external musicians are featured in the movie, its closing credits, and the soundtrack album, some of which were written for the film. HP Pavilion DV9920US Battery Many of the musicians featured, for example Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine and Marilyn Manson, had also appeared on the soundtrack for The Matrix. Rob Dougan also re-contributed, licensing the instrumental version of "Furious Angels", as well as being commissioned to provide an original track, HP Pavilion DV9922US Battery ultimately scoring the battle in the Merovingian's chateau. A remixed version of "Slap It" by electronic artist Fluke - listed on the soundtrack as "Zion" - was used during the rave scene. Linkin Park contributed their instrumental song "Session" to the film as well, although it did not appear during the course of the film. P.O.D. composed a song called "Sleeping Awake", HP Pavilion DV9924CA Battery with a music video which focused heavily on Neo, as well as many images that were part of the film. Both songs played during the film's credits. The Matrix Revolutions is a 2003 American science fiction action film and the third installment of The Matrix trilogy. HP Pavilion DV9925EZ Battery The film was released six months following The Matrix Reloaded. The film was written and directed by the Wachowski brothers and released simultaneously in 60 countries on November 5, 2003. Despite the fact that it is the final film in the series, the Matrix storyline continued in The Matrix Online. HP Pavilion DV9925NR Battery The film was the second live-action film to be released in both regular and IMAX movie theaters at the same time. Neo and Bane lie unconscious in the medical bay of the hovercraft Mjolnir. Meanwhile, Neo finds his mind trapped in a virtual subway station – a transition zone between the Matrix and the Machine City. HP Pavilion DV9927CL Battery He meets a "family" of programs, including a girl named Sati, whose father tells Neo the subway is controlled by the Trainman, an exiled program loyal to the Merovingian. When Neo tries to board a train with the family, the Trainman refuses and overpowers him. HP Pavilion DV9930EB Battery Seraph contacts Morpheus and Trinity on behalf of the Oracle, who informs them of Neo's confinement. Seraph, Morpheus and Trinity enter Club Hel, where they confront the Merovingian and force him to release Neo. Troubled by visions of the Machine City, Neo visits the Oracle, who reveals that Smith intends to destroy both the Matrix and the real world. HP Pavilion DV9930EF Battery She states that "everything that has a beginning has an end", and that the war will conclude. After Neo leaves, a large group of Smiths assimilates Sati, Seraph and the unresisting Oracle, gaining her powers of precognition. In the real world, the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar and the Mjolnir find and reactivate Niobe's ship, the Logos. HP Pavilion DV9930US Battery They interrogate Bane, who claims to have no memory of the earlier massacre. As the captains plan their defense of Zion, Neo requests a ship to travel to the Machine City. Motivated by her encounter with the Oracle, Niobe offers him the Logos. Neo departs, accompanied by Trinity. Bane, who has stowed away on theLogos, takes Trinity hostage. HP Pavilion DV9933CA Battery Neo realizes that Bane has been assimilated by Smith. Bane cauterizes Neo's eyes with a power cable, blinding him; however, Neo discovers an ability to perceive the world as golden light. Neo kills Bane, and Trinity pilots them to the Machine City. Niobe and Morpheus set out for Zion with the Mjolnirto aid the human defenses against the Sentinels. HP Pavilion DV9933CL Battery In Zion, the fatally wounded Captain Mifune instructs Kid to open the gate for the Mjolnir. When it arrives, it discharges its EMP, disabling the Sentinels but also the remaining defenses. The humans are forced to retreat and wait for the next attack, which they believe will be their last stand. HP Pavilion DV9934CA Battery Neo and Trinity are attacked by machines, causing them to crash the Logos into the Machine City. The impact kills Trinity. Neo enters the Machine City and encounters the "Deus Ex Machina", the machine leader. HP Pavilion DV9940EG Battery Neo, warning that Smith plans to conquer both the Matrix and the real world, offers to stop Smith in exchange for peace with Zion. The machine leader agrees, and the Sentinels stop attacking Zion. The Machines provide a connection for Neo to enter the Matrix. Neo finds that Smith has assimilated all its inhabitants. HP Pavilion DV9940EJ Battery The Smith with the Oracle's powers steps forth, claiming to have foreseen his victory. After a protracted battle, Neo baits Smith into assimilating him. The machine leader sends a burst of energy into Neo's body, causing the Smiths to be destroyed. In the real world, the Sentinels withdraw from Zion, Neo's body is carried away by the machines, and Morpheus and Niobe embrace. HP Pavilion DV9940ER Battery The Matrix "reboots", and the Architect encounters the Oracle in a park. They agree that the peace will last "as long as it can", and that all humans will be offered the opportunity to leave the Matrix. The Oracle tells Sati that she thinks they will see Neo again. Seraph asks the Oracle if she knew this would happen, and she replies that she did not know, but she believed. HP Pavilion DV9950EF Battery Keanu Charles Reeves ( /keɪˈɑːnuː/ kay-ah-noo; born September 2, 1964)[1] is a Canadian film actor. Reeves is perhaps best known for his role in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure as well as SpeedPoint Break and the science fiction-action trilogy The Matrix. HP Pavilion DV9950EK Battery He has worked under major directors, such as Stephen Frears (in the 1988 period drama Dangerous Liaisons); Gus Van Sant (in the 1991 independent film My Own Private Idaho); and Bernardo Bertolucci (in the 1993 filmLittle Buddha). Referring to his 1991 film releases, HP Pavilion DV9950ER Battery The New York Times’ critic, Janet Maslin, praised Reeves’ versatility, saying that he “displays considerable discipline and range. He moves easily between the buttoned-down demeanor that suits a police procedural story and the loose-jointed manner of his comic roles.”[2] HP Pavilion DV9950ES Battery A repeated theme in roles he has portrayed is that of saving the world, including the characters of Ted Logan, Buddha, Neo, Johnny Mnemonic,John Constantine and Klaatu. In addition to his film roles, Reeves has also performed in theatre. His performance in the title role in a Manitoba Theatre Centre production of Hamlet was praised by Roger Lewis, HP Pavilion DV9960EB Battery the Sunday Times, who declared Reeves " … one of the top three Hamlets I have seen, for a simple reason: he is Hamlet."[3] On January 31, 2005, Reeves received a star on theHollywood Walk of Fame. Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, the son of Patricia Bond (née Taylor), a costume designer/performer, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves, Jr., a geologist. HP Pavilion DV9960EW Battery His mother was English and his father was a Hawaiian-born American of English, Irish, Portuguese, Native Hawaiian, and Chinese descent.Reeves's mother was working in Beirut when she met his father. Reeves' father worked as an unskilled laborer and earned his GED while imprisoned in Hawaii for selling heroin at Hilo International Airport.[7] HP Pavilion DV9970EB Battery He abandoned his wife and family when Reeves was three years old, and Reeves does not currently have any relationship with him.[7] Reeves moved around the world frequently as a child and he lived with various stepfathers. After his parents divorced in 1966, HP Pavilion DV9970EF Battery his mother became a costume designer and moved the family to Sydney, Australia[8] and then to New York City. There she met and married Paul Aaron, a Broadway and Hollywood director. The couple moved to Toronto; they divorced in 1971. Reeves' mother married Robert Miller, a rock promoter, in 1976; the couple divorced in 1980. HP Pavilion DV9970EM Battery She subsequently married her fourth husband, Jack Bond, a hairdresser, a marriage that broke up in 1994. Grandparents and nannies babysat Reeves and his sisters, and Reeves grew up primarily in Toronto. Within a span of five years, he attended four different high schools, including the Etobicoke School of the Arts, from which he was later expelled. HP Pavilion DV9975EF Battery Reeves stated he was expelled "I was just a little too rambunctious and shot my mouth off once too often. I was not generally the most well-oiled machine in the school." [9] Reeves excelled more in hockey than in academics, as his educational development was challenged by dyslexia. HP Pavilion DV9980EF Battery He was a successful goalie at one of his high schools (De La Salle College "Oaklands"). While Reeves dreamed of becoming an Olympic hockey player for Canada, an injury ended his hopes for a hockey career. After leaving De La Salle College, he attended an anarchistic free school (Avondale Alternative), HP Pavilion DV9980EI Battery which allowed him to obtain an education while working as an actor; he later dropped out, never obtaining his high school diploma.[10]In January 2011, on the BBC program The One Show, he spoke of his English ancestry, via his mother, mentioning his happy watching of The Two Ronnies comedy show amongst others when younger, and how his mother imparted English manners that he still has today. HP Pavilion DV9860EZ Battery Reeves began his acting career at the age of nine, appearing in a theatre production of Damn Yankees. At 15, he played Mercutio in a stage production of Romeo and Juliet at the Leah Posluns Theatre. Reeves made his screen acting debut in a CBC Television comedy series entitled Hangin' In. HP Pavilion DV9860US Battery Throughout the early 1980s, he appeared in commercials (including one for Coca-Cola), short films including the NFB drama One Step Away[12] and stage work such as Brad Fraser's cult hitWolfboy in Toronto. In 1984, he was a correspondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation TV youth program Going Great.[13] HP Pavilion DV9865EG Battery Reeves' first studio movie appearance was in the Rob Lowe ice hockey film Youngblood, in which he played a Québécois goalie. Shortly after the movie's release, Reeves drove to Los Angeles in his 1969 Volvo. His ex-stepfather Paul Aaron, a stage and television director, had convinced Erwin Stoff to be Reeves' manager and agent before he even arrived in Los Angeles.HP Pavilion DV9865EK Battery Stoff has remained Reeves' manager, and has co-produced many of his films. After a few minor roles, Reeves received a more sizable role in the 1986 drama film River's Edge, which depicted how a murder affected a group of teens. Following this film's critical success, HP Pavilion DV9868EG Battery he spent the late 1980s appearing in a number of movies aimed at teenage audiences, including Permanent Record, and the unexpectedly successful 1989 comedy,Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, which, along with its 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, typecast Reeves as a spaced-out teen. HP Pavilion DV9870EA Battery Much of his portrayal in the press and much of the response to his acting in the early 1990s still mentioned his portrayal of the airheaded Ted.During the early 1990s, Reeves started to break out of his teen-film period. He appeared in high-budget action films like Point Break, for which he won MTV's "Most Desirable Male" award in 1992. HP Pavilion DV9870EB Battery He was also involved in various lower-budget independent films, including the well-received 1991 film, My Own Private Idahowith his close friend, the late River Phoenix. In 1994, Reeves' career reached a new high as a result of his starring role in the action film Speed. HP Pavilion DV9870ED Battery His casting in the film was controversial since, except for Point Break, he was primarily known for comedies and indie dramas. He had never been the sole headliner on a film. The summer action film had a fairly large budget and was helmed by novice cinematographer-turned-director Jan de Bont. HP Pavilion DV9870EF Battery The unexpected international success of the film made Reeves and co-star Sandra Bullock into A-List stars. Reeves' career choices after Speed were eclectic: despite his successes, Reeves continued to accept supporting roles and appear in experimental films. HP Pavilion DV9870EP Battery He scored a hit with a romantic lead role in A Walk in the Clouds. He made news by refusing to take part in Speed 2: Cruise Control and choosing to play the title role in a 1995 Manitoba Theatre Centre production of Hamlet in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[14] Roger Lewis, the Sunday Times critic, wrote, HP Pavilion DV9870EW Battery "He quite embodied the innocence, the splendid fury, the animal grace of the leaps and bounds, the emotional violence, that form the Prince of Denmark... He is one of the top three Hamlets I have seen, for a simple reason: he is Hamlet." Reeves' other choices after A Walk in the Clouds, however, failed with critics and audiences. HP Pavilion DV9872EZ Battery Big-budget films such as the sci-fi action film Johnny Mnemonic and the action-thriller Chain Reaction were critically panned and failed at the box office, while indie films like Feeling Minnesota were also critical failures. Reeves started to climb out of his career low after starring in the horror/drama The Devil's Advocate alongside Al Pacino and Charlize Theron. HP Pavilion DV9876EG Battery Reeves deferred his salary for The Devil's Advocate so that Pacino would be cast, as he would do later for the less successful The Replacements to guarantee the casting of Gene Hackman.[16] The Devil's Advocate did well at the box office, received good reviews, HP Pavilion DV9880EA Battery and proved that Reeves could play a grown-up with a career, although many critics felt that his poor performance detracted from an otherwise enjoyable movie. The 1999 science fiction-action hit The Matrix, a film in which Reeves had a starring role, was a box office success and attracted positive reviews.[16] HP Pavilion DV9880ED Battery In between the first Matrix film and its sequels, Reeves received positive reviews for his portrayal of an abusive husband in The Gift. Aside from The Gift, Reeves appeared in several films that received mostly negative reviews and unimpressive box office grosses, including The Watcher, Sweet November and The Replacements. HP Pavilion DV9880EE Battery However, the two Matrix sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, Something's Gotta Give, and the 2005 horror-action film, Constantine, proved to be box office successes and brought Reeves back into the public spotlight. His appearance in the 2006 film, A Scanner Darkly, HP Pavilion DV9880EG Battery based on the dystopian science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick, received favorable reviews, but The Lake House, his romantic outing with Sandra Bullock, did not do well at the box office. He went on to play the lead character in two 2008 films, Street Kings and The Day the Earth Stood Still. In February 2009 The Private Life of Pippa Lee was presented at Berlinale.[17] HP Pavilion DV9880EO Battery Reeves started filming the surrealist romantic comedy Henry's Crime in December 2009, with filming wrapped up in early 2010. After this he started working as producer and star on the science-fiction space drama Passengers, written by Jon Spaihts.[18] In January 2009, it was revealed that Reeves will star in the live-action film adaptation of the anime series Cowboy Bebop, HP Pavilion DV9880EP Battery slated for release in 2011. Other upcoming projects include the samurai film 47 RoninChef – story by Reeves and written by Steven Knight, and a modern retelling of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, scripted by Justin Haythe and titled Jekyll. HP Pavilion DV9880ES Battery Nicolas Winding Refn was in negotiations to direct but was eventually replaced by Dennis Iliadis and produced by Universal Pictures.[21] In April 2011, Reeves confirmed that a third installment of the Bill & Ted movie series was underway. HP Pavilion DV9880EV Battery For nearly a decade following his initial rise to stardom, Reeves preferred to live in rental houses and hotels. He was a long-term resident of the Chateau Marmont. Reeves bought his first house in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles around 2003. He also has an apartment on Central Park West in New York City.[23] HP Pavilion DV9880EW Battery He is a U.S. citizen through his American father, and also holds Canadian citizenship by naturalization; he grew up as a Canadian and identifies as such.[23] Due to April 2003 changes in the law, he is entitled to British citizenship through his English mother. HP Pavilion DV9880EZ Battery Reeves has never married.[24] In December 1999, his girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, gave birth to a stillborn daughter, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves. Syme died in 2001, a sole driver involved in an automobile wreck, while partying in Los Angeles.[25] Reeves was sued unsuccessfully in 2008 in Los Angeles Superior Court for $711,974[26] by paparazzo HP Pavilion DV9885EA Battery Alison Silva for allegedly hitting and injuring him with his Porsche after visiting a relative at a Los Angeles medical facility.[27][28] The paparazzo's lawsuit took a year and a half to make it to trial, during which time Silva continued to attack Reeves and demand payment. At the trial, all 12 jurors rejected the suit needing only an hour of deliberation to reach their verdict. HP Pavilion DV9885EB Battery With the lawsuit rejected, Reeves was cleared of all the charges.[29] In 2010, photos of a sad-looking Keanu Reeves eating a sandwich while alone led to the spread of the "Keanu is Sad/Sad Keanu" Internet meme and the declaration of June 15 as "Unofficial Cheer-up Keanu Day" by a Facebook fanpage. HP Pavilion DV9885EO Battery Laurence John Fishburne III[1] (born July 30, 1961) is an American film and stage actor, playwright, director, and producer. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Morpheus in the Matrix science fiction film trilogy, as Cowboy Curtis on the 1980s television show Pee-wee's Playhouse, HP Pavilion DV9888EO Battery and as singer-musician Ike Turner in the Tina Turner biopicWhat's Love Got to Do With It. He became the first African American to portray Othello in a motion picture by a major studio when he appeared in Oliver Parker's 1995 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play. HP Pavilion DV9890ED Battery Fishburne's father saw him once a month.[3][4] He is a graduate of Lincoln Square Academy in New York, which closed in the 1980s. Fishburne started acting at age eleven (according to his January 13, 2012 interview on The View, which commemorated One Life to Live). HP Pavilion DV9890EF Battery In 1973 he had his first job, as a member briefly featured on the Mod Squad, followed by portraying Joshua Hall on the ABC soap opera, One Life to Live. He was initially cast in the hit television series Good Times, but the role went to Ralph Carter. Fishburne later earned a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola'sApocalypse Now, in which he played a 17-year-old sailor nicknamed 'Mr. Clean'. HP Pavilion DV9890EL Battery When production began in March 1976 he was just fourteen, apparently lying about his age to get the part. Filming took so long that he was seventeen upon its completion. Fishburne spent much of the 1980s in and out of television and periodically on stage. In the early 1980s, he worked as a bouncer at punk rock clubs.[5] HP Pavilion DV9890EO Battery He had a minor role in the critically acclaimed Steven Spielberg film The Color Purple. He also had a role in the 1984 movie The Cotton Club. Fishburne had a recurring role as Cowboy Curtis on Paul Reubens' CBS children's television show Pee-wee's Playhouse. He also appeared in the M*A*S*H episode, HP Pavilion DV9890EP Battery "The Tooth Shall Set You Free", as Corporal Dorsey (billed as Larry Fishburne in the credits). Fishburne also starred as "Dap" in Spike Lee's School Daze (1988). Fishburne's character was the depiction of an African American, culturally inclined college student at an HBCU (Historically Black College/University). In 1990, he played Jimmy Jump in the controversial King of New York, and in 1991, HP Pavilion DV9894CA Battery Fishburne starred in Boyz n the Hood. The following year, in 1992, he won aTony Award for his stage performance in the August Wilson play, Two Trains Running and an Emmy Award[6] for his performance in the opening episode, "The Box," of the short-lived anthology series television drama TriBeCa.
