Aramis loves and intrigues women

Aramis loves and intrigues women, which fits well with the opinions of the time regarding Jesuits and abbots. He is portrayed as constantly ambitious and unsatisfied: as a musketeer, he yearns to become an abbé; Sony VAIO VGN-CS120J/Q Battery but when an abbé he wishes for the life of the soldier. In the books it is revealed he became a musketeer because of a woman and his arrogance: as a young boy whose (plausibly genuine) ambition was to become an abbé, he had the misfortune to be caught and thrown out of a house, while (innocently or not) reading to a young woman. Sony VAIO VGN-CS120J/R Battery For a year, he practised fencing, every day with the best master swordsman in town to get his revenge. By the time he came back to confront the man who had mistreated him, he had become such an expert swordsman that the fight only lasted a couple of seconds. Because duels were forbidden by royal edict and Aramis was a novitiate, Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTB Battery he had to disappear and adopt a very low profile, which led him to enlist in the musketeers corps. There he met Athos and Porthos, then later on d'Artagnan. After a couple of years they work together to bring peace to the king's court and kept the queen's affair with the Duke of Buckingham from being revealed by Cardinal Richelieu, which audacity so impresses the cardinal he helps d'Artagnan into the Musketeers corps. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTP Battery Aramis seems to be lucky, but it is only a result of his Machiavellian plans and his audacity; every step forward must be used to climb to even greater power. This characteristic leads to his nomination as Superior General of the Jesuits, which is precisely what saves his life, at the end of Le Vicomte De Bragelonne, after he is betrayed by Nicolas Fouquet. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTQ Battery Despite his Machiavellian attitude, Aramis holds very firmly to the sacred concept of friendship. In fact, the only wrong moves Aramis ever made were done when he refused to harm a friend (or a friend's feelings). In Twenty Years After, he followed Athos's pleas to spare Mordaunt, while he was holding him at gunpoint and, in Le Vicomte De Bragelonne, Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTR Battery he refused to suppress d'Artagnan, when he discovered the truth about Belle-Ile-En-Mer, and he let Fouquet betray him, instead of assassinating him. Aramis even tells the truth to Porthos about the man in the iron mask's real identity, despite fearing that Porthos would kill him. Friendship is so important to Aramis that it is strongly implied, Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTW Battery at the end of Le Vicomte De Bragelonne, that he cried (for the first time in his entire life) when one of his friends died. Later, he explicitly told someone that he considered him a true friend.Aramis' political intrigues are matched by (and usually connected with) his amorous intrigues, as Dumas casts him in the role of the lover of politically powerful women of his time. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTP Battery In The Three Musketeers ca. 1627, he is the lover of the Duchesse de Chevreuse, the confidant of the queen (and is largely dependent on gold from her to survive, as military pay was low and infrequent), while in Twenty Years later he is the lover (and, it is broadly implied, the father of the son of) the Duchesse de Longueville. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTQ Battery In contrast to the other musketeers, Aramis is referred to by his first name twice by Dumas: he is christened René. We hear this name when d'Artagnan stumbles upon him and his mistress in the second book (in the chapter: Les Deux Gaspard), and again when Bazin is talking about Aramis in the third. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTR Battery In Twenty Years After he is a Jesuit known as the Abbé d'Herblay (but prefers to go by the title of Chevalier d'Herblay). In The Vicomte de Bragelonne he is known as the Bishop of Vannes, a title given to him by Nicolas Fouquet and later he became the Superior General of the Jesuits. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190JTW Battery When he comes back from exile, he is a Spanish nobleand ambassador known as Duke of Alameda. Porthos, Baron du Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds is a fictional character in the novels The Three Musketeers,Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas, père. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NAB Battery He and the other two musketeers Athos andAramis are friends of the novel's protagonist, d'Artagnan (see D'Artagnan Romances). He carries a sword that Aramis nicknamed Balizarde. In The Three Musketeers his family name is du Vallon. In Twenty Years After, after a successful wedding, Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NAC Battery he is first known as du Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds, then he earns the title of baron.[1] Porthos, honest and slightly gullible, is the extrovert of the group, enjoying wine, women and song. Though he is often seen as the comic relief, he is also extremely dedicated and loyal toward his friends and fellow Musketeers. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NAD Battery His eating abilities even impress King Louis XIV during a banquet at Versailles. As the story advances, he looks more and more of a giant, and his death is that of a titan. At the time of The Three Musketeers (ca. 1627) he apparently has few lands or other resources to draw from. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NBB Battery He was finally able to extract sufficient funds from an elderly lawyer's somewhat younger wife (whom he was romancing) to equip himself for the Siege of La Rochelle. The fictional Porthos is very loosely based on the historical musketeer Isaac de Porthau. Charles Ogier de Batz de Castelmore, Comte d'Artagnan (French pronunciation: [ʃaʁl oʒje də bats də kastɛlmɔʁ kɔ̃t daʁtaɲɑ̃]) Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NCA Battery (c. 1611 – 25 June 1673) served Louis XIV as captain of the Musketeers of the Guard and died at the Siege of Maastricht in the Franco-Dutch War. A fictionalized account of his life by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras formed the basis for the d'Artagnan Romances of Alexandre Dumas, most famously including The Three Musketeers. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NCB Battery The heavily fictionalized version of d'Artagnan featured in Dumas' works and theirsubsequent screen adaptations is now far more widely known than the real historical figure. D'Artagnan was born near Lupiac. His father, Bertrand de Batz (de Baatz), was the son of a newly ennobled merchant, Arnaud de Batz, who purchased the castle of Castelmore. Sony VAIO VGN-CS190NCC Battery Charles de Batz went to Paris in the 1630s, using the name of his mother, daughter of an illustrious family, Françoise de Montesquiou d'Artagnan. D'Artagnan found a way to enter into the Musketeers in 1632, perhaps thanks to the influence of his family's friend, Monsieur de Tréville (Jean-Armand du Peyrer, Comte de Troisville).[1] Sony VAIO VGN-CS50B/W Battery While in the Musketeers, d'Artagnan sought the protection of the influential Cardinal Mazarin, France's principal minister since 1643. In 1646, the Musketeers company was dissolved, but d'Artagnan continued to serve his protector Mazarin.D'Artagnan had a career in espionage for Cardinal Mazarin, in the years after the first Fronde. Sony VAIO VGN-CS51B/W Battery Due to d'Artagnan's faithful service during this period, Louis XIV entrusted him with many secret and delicate situations that required complete discretion. He followed Mazarin during his exile in 1651 in the face of the hostility of the aristocracy. In 1652 d'Artagnan was promoted to lieutenant in the Gardes Françaises, then to captain in 1655. Sony VAIO VGN-CS52JB/W Battery In 1658, he became a second lieutenant in the newly reformed Musketeers. This was a promotion, as the Musketeers were far more prestigious than the Gardes-Françaises.D'Artagnan was famous for his connection with the arrest of Nicolas Fouquet. Fouquet was Louis XIV's finance commissioner and aspired to take the place of Mazarin as the King's advisor. Sony VAIO VGN-CS60B/P Battery Fouquet was also a lover of grand architecture and employed the greatest architects and artisans in the building of his Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte. He celebrated the completion with a most extravagant feast, at which every guest was given a horse. The king however felt upstaged by the grandeur of the home and event and, Sony VAIO VGN-CS60B/Q Battery suspecting that such magnificence could only be explained through Fouquet's pilfering the royal treasury, three weeks later had d'Artagnan arrest Fouquet. To prevent his escape by bribery, D'Artagnan was assigned to guard him for four years until Fouquet was sentenced to life imprisonment. Sony VAIO VGN-CS60B/R Battery In 1667, d'Artagnan was promoted to captain-lieutenant of the Musketeers, the effective commander as the nominal captain was the King. As befitted his rank and position, he could be identified by his striking burgundy, white and black livery—the colours of the commanding officer of the Musketeers. Sony VAIO VGN-CS61B/P Battery Another of d'Artagnan's assignments was the governorship of Lille, which was won in battle by France in 1667. D'Artagnan was an unpopular governor and longed to return to battle. He found his chance when Louis XIV went to war with the Dutch Republic in the Franco-Dutch War. Sony VAIO VGN-CS61B/Q Battery After being recalled to service, d'Artagnan was subsequently killed in battle on June 25, 1673, when a musket ball tore into his throat at the Siege of Maastricht. The French historian Odile Bordaz believes that he was buried in Saint Peter and Paul Church in Wolder, the Netherlands. Sony VAIO VGN-CS61B/R Battery The real d'Artagnan's life was used as the basis for Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras' novel Les mémoires de M. d'Artagnan.Alexandre Dumas in turn used de Sandras' novel as the main source for his d'Artagnan Romances (The Three MusketeersTwenty Years AfterThe Vicomte de Bragelonne, and The Man in the Iron Mask), Sony VAIO VGN-CS62JB/P Battery which cover d'Artagnan's career from his humble life's beginnings in Gascony to his death at Maastricht. Although Dumas knew that de Sandras' version was heavily fictionalised, in the preface to The Three Musketeers he affected to believe that the memoirs were real, in order to make his novel more believable. Sony VAIO VGN-CS62JB/Q Battery D'Artagnan is initially portrayed by Dumas as a hotheaded youth, and tries to engage the Comte de Rochefort and the three musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis in single combat. He quickly becomes friends with the musketeers, and has a series of adventures which put him at odds with Cardinal Richelieu, then First Minister of France. Sony VAIO VGN-CS62JB/R Battery In the end, Richelieu is impressed by d'Artagnan, and makes him a Lieutenant of the Musketeers. This begins his long career of military service, as detailed in the sequels to Dumas' famous novel. Some scholars believe aspects of D'Artagnan are drawn from the life and character of Dumas's mulatto father, Sony VAIO VGN-CS71B/W Battery the General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, as when D'Artagnan challenges Porthos, Athos, and Aramis to duels on the same afternoon, when Dumas describes his face as "brown," or on an incident in General Dumas's youth when he was insulted, or on General Dumas's youthful companionship with fellow soldiers in the Queen's Dragoons.[3] Sony VAIO VGN-CS72JB/W Battery D'Artagnan's role among the Musketeers is one of leadership (his skills and brains impress the musketeers greatly), but he is also regarded as a sort of protégé given his youth and inexperience. The musketeers (especially Athos) see him not only as a best friend and fellow musketeer (despite his initial job as a guard) but as a son. Sony VAIO VGN-CS90HS Battery They are very protective of him, though they usually let him take care of himself like the others. Another Comte d'Artagnan, Pierre de Montesquiou, contributed the idea that Dumas' d'Artagnan should become a Marshal of France. Sony VAIO VGN-CS90NS Battery Towards the end of the story, his death at the siege of Maastricht is given an extra tragic twist - he is mortally wounded whilst reading the notice of his promotion to the highest rank.
