James Bond (character)

Royal Navy Commander James Bond, CMG, RNVR, is a fictional character created by British journalist and novelist Ian Fleming in 1953. He is the main protagonist of the James Bond series of novels, films, comics and video games. Sony VAIO PCG-3B1M Battery Fleming wrote twelve Bond novels and two short story collections before his death, although the last two books—The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy and The Living Daylights—were published posthumously. The Bond character is a Secret Service agent, code number 007, residing in London but active internationally. Sony VAIO PCG-3C1T Battery Bond was a composite character who was based on a number of commandos who Fleming knew during his service in the Naval Intelligence Division during World War II, to whom Fleming added his own style and a number of his own tastes; Bond's name was appropriated from American ornithologist James Bond. Sony VAIO PCG-3D1M Battery Bond has a number of character traits which run throughout the books, including an enjoyment of cars, a love of food and drink, and an average intake of sixty custom-made cigarettes a day. Since Fleming's death in 1964, there have been other authorised writers of Bond material, including John Gardner, Sony VAIO PCG-3G2M Battery who wrote fourteen novels and two novelizations and Raymond Benson, who wrote six novels, three novelizations and three short stories. There have also been three authors who wrote one book each, Kingsley Amis (writing as Robert Markham), Sebastian Faulks and Jeffrey Deaver. Sony VAIO PCG-5R1M Battery Additionally a series of novels based on Bond's youth—Young Bond—was written by Charlie Higson. As spin-offs from the literary works, there was a television adaptation of the first novel, Casino Royale, in which Bond was played as an American agent. Sony VAIO PCG-7141M Battery A comic strip series also ran in the Daily Express newspaper. There have also been twenty-four Bond films, with a twenty-fifth due for release on 26 October 2012; seven actors have played Bond in these films. The central figure in Ian Fleming's work was the fictional character of James Bond, an intelligence officer in the "Secret Service".Sony VAIO PCG-7143M Battery Bond was also known by his code number, 007, and was a Royal Naval Reserve Commander. During World War II, Ian Fleming had mentioned to friends that he wanted to write a spy novel.[2] It was not until 1952, however, shortly before his wedding to his pregnant girlfriend, Ann Charteris, that Fleming began to write Casino Royale, Sony VAIO PCG-7151M Battery to distract himself from his forthcoming nuptials.[3] Fleming started writing on his first book, Casino Royale, at hisGoldeneye estate in Jamaica on 17 February 1952, typing out 2,000 words in the morning, directly from his own experiences and imagination.[4] He finished work on the script in just over a month,[5] completing it on 18 March 1952.[6] Sony VAIO PCG-7154M Battery Describing the work as his "dreadful oafish opus",[7] Fleming showed it to an ex-girlfriend, Clare Blanchard, who advised him not to publish it at all, but that if he did so, it should be under another name.[8] Fleming went on to write a total of twelve Bond novels and two short story collections; he died on the morning of 12 August 1964.[9] Sony VAIO PCG-7162M Battery The last two books—The Man with the Golden Gun andOctopussy and The Living Daylights—were published posthumously.[10] Inspiration for the character Fleming based his creation on a number of individuals he came across during his time in the Naval Intelligence Division during World War II, Sony VAIO PCG-7181M Battery admitting that Bond "was a compound of all the secret agents and commando types I met during the war".[11] Amongst those types were his brother, Peter, who Fleming worshipped,[11] and who had been involved in behind the lines operations in Norway and Greece during the war.[12] Sony VAIO PCG-41112M Battery   Aside from Fleming's brother, a number of others also provided some aspects of Bond's make up, including Conrad O'Brien-ffrench, a skiing spy whom Fleming had met in Kitzbühel in the 1930s, Patrick Dalzel-Job, who served with distinction in 30 AU during the war, andBill "Biffy" Dunderdale, Sony VAIO PCG-7153M Battery station head of MI6 in Paris, who wore cufflinks and handmade suits and was chauffeured around Paris in aRolls-Royce.[11][13] Sir Fitzroy MacLean was another figure mentioned as a possibility, based on his wartime work behind enemy lines in the Balkans, as was the MI6 double agent Dušan Popov.[14] Sony VAIO PCG-71312M Battery Origins of the name Fleming took the name for his character from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbeanbird expert and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies; Fleming, a keen birdwatcherhimself, Sony VAIO PCG-7144M Battery had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist’s wife that "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born". On another occasion Fleming said: "I wanted the simplest, dullest, plainest-sounding name I could find, Sony VAIO PCG-7191L Battery 'James Bond' was much better than something more interesting, like 'Peregrine Carruthers'. Exotic things would happen to and around him, but he would be a neutral figure—an anonymous, blunt instrument wielded by a government department."[17] After Fleming met the ornithologist and his wife, he described them as "a charming couple who are amused by the whole joke".Sony VAIO PCG-3C1M Battery   Bond's number—007—comes from the English spy and polymath John Dee, who would sign his letters to Elizabeth I with 00 and an elongated 7, to signify they were for her eyes only.[19][20] The number was also assigned by Fleming in reference to one of British naval intelligence's key achievements of World War I: the breaking of the German diplomatic code.[20Sony VAIO PCG-3F1M Battery One of the German documents cracked and read by the British was the Zimmermann Telegram, which was coded 0075,[21] and which was one of the factors that led the US entering the war. Looks Facially, Bond resembles the composer, singer and actor Hoagy Carmichael. In Casino Royale Vesper Lynd remarks, Sony VAIO PCG-3H1M Battery "Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless." Likewise, in Moonraker, Special Branch Officer Gala Brand thinks that Bond is "certainly good-looking . . . Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. That black hair falling down over the right eyebrow. Sony VAIO PCG-3J1M Battery Much the same bones. But there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold."[22] Others, such as journalist Ben Macintyre, identify aspects of Fleming's own looks in his description of Bond.[23] General references in the novels describe Bond as having "dark, rather cruel good looks".[24] Sony VAIO PCG-8141M Battery   In the novels (notably From Russia, with Love), Bond's physical description has generally been consistent: slim build; a three-inch long, thin vertical scar on his right cheek; blue-grey eyes; a "cruel" mouth; short, black hair, a comma of which falls on his forehead. Sony VAIO PCG-8161M Battery Physically he is described as 183 centimetres (6 feet) in height and 76 kilograms (167 lb) in weight.[24] After Casino Royale, Bond also had the faint scar of the Russian cyrillic letter "Ш" (SH) (for Shpion: "Spy") on the back of one of his hands, carved by a SMERSHagent.[25] Sony VAIO PCG-3C2M Battery Background In Ian Fleming's stories, James Bond is in his mid-to-late thirties, but does not age.[26] In Moonraker, he admits to being eight years shy of mandatory retirement age from the 00 section—forty-five—which would mean he was thirty-seven at the time.[27] Sony VAIO PCG-5N2M Battery Fleming did not provide Bond's date of birth, but John Pearson's fictional biography of Bond, James Bond: The Authorized Biography of 007, gives him a birth date of 11 November 1920,[28] whilst a study by Bond scholar John Griswold puts the date at 11 November 1921.[29] Sony VAIO PCG-5P1M Battery According to Griswold, the Fleming novels take place between around May 1951,[30] to February 1964, by which time Bond was aged 42. It was not until the penultimate novel, You Only Live Twice, that Fleming gave Bond a sense of family background, using a fictional obituary, purportedly fromThe Times.[33] Sony VAIO PCG-5S1M Battery The book was the first to be written after the release of Dr. No in cinemas and Sean Connery's depiction of Bond affected Fleming's interpretation of the character, to give Bond both a sense of humour and Scottish antecedents that were not present in the previous stories.[34] The novel reveals Bond is the son of a Scottish father, Sony VAIO PCG-9Z1M Battery Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, and a Swiss mother, Monique Delacroix, of the Canton de Vaud.[35] The young James Bond spends much of his early life abroad, becoming multilingual in German and French because of his father's work as a Vickers armaments company representative. Sony VAIO PCG-7171M Battery When his parents are killed in a mountain climbing accident in the Aiguilles Rouges near Chamonix, eleven-year-old James is orphaned. After the death of his parents, Bond goes to live with his aunt, Miss Charmian Bond, in the village of Pett Bottom, where he completes his early education. Sony VAIO PCG-7186M Battery Later, he briefly attends Eton College at "12 or thereabouts", but is removed after two halvesbecause of girl trouble with a maid.[33] After being sent down from Eton, Bond was sent to Fettes College in Scotland, his father's school.[35] On his first visit to Paris at the age of sixteen, Sony VAIO PCG-81112M Battery Bond lost his virginity, later reminiscing about the event in "From a View to a Kill".[37] After leaving Fettes, Fleming used his own upbringing for his creation, with Bond alluding to briefly attending the University of Geneva,[38] (as did Fleming) before being taught to ski in Kitzbühel (as was Fleming) by Hannes Oberhauser, who was later killed in "Octopussy".Sony VAIO PCG-31311M Battery   In 1941, Bond joined the Ministry of Defence and became a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves, ending the war as a commander. Bond applied to M for a position within the "Secret Service", part of the Civil Service, and rose to the rank of principal officer.[40] Sony VAIO PCG-8152M Battery   At the start of Fleming's first book, Casino Royale, Bond is already a 00 agent having been given the position after killing two enemy agents, a Japanese spy on the thirty-sixth floor of the RCA Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City and a Norwegian double agent who had betrayed two British agents; Sony VAIO PCG-31111M Battery it is suggested by Bond scholar John Griswold that these were part of Bond's wartime service with Special Operations Executive, a British World War II covert military organisation.[41] In 1954, according to the Soviet file on him in From Russia, With Love, Bond is made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. Sony VAIO PCG-61111M Battery   Fleming biographer Andrew Lycett noted that, "within the first few pages [of Casino Royale] Ian had introduced most of Bond's idiosyncrasies and trademarks", which included his looks, his Bentley and his smoking and drinking habits.[42] The full details of Bond's martini were kept until chapter seven of the book and Bond eventually named it "The Vesper",Sony VAIO PCG-51112M Battery  after Vesper Lynd. Bond's drinking habits run throughout the series of books. During the course of On Her Majesty's Secret Service alone Bond consumes forty-six drinks: Pouilly-Fuissé, Riquewihr and Marsala wines, most of a bottle of Algerian wine, some 1953 Château Mouton Rothschild claret, along with Taittinger and Krug champagnes and Babycham; Sony VAIO PCG-51211M Battery for whiskies he consumes three bourbon and waters, half a pint of I.W. Harper bourbon, Jack Daniel's whiskey, two double bourbons on the rocks, two whisky and sodas, two neat scotches and one glass of neat whisky; vodka consumption totalled four vodka and tonics and three double vodka martinis; Sony VAIO PCG-51212M Battery other sprits included two double brandies with ginger ale, a flask of Enzian Schnaps and a double gin: he also washed this down with four steins of German beer.[44][45] For his non-alcoholic drinks Bond eschews tea, calling it "mud" and blaming it for the downfall of the British Empire. He instead prefers to drink coffee.[46] Sony VAIO PCG-41111M Battery   Cuisine When in England and not on a mission, Bond dines as simply as Fleming did on dishes such as grilled sole, oeufs en cocotte and cold roast beef with potato salad.[47] When on a mission, however, Bond eats more extravagantly.[48] Sony VAIO PCG-41111V Battery This was partly because in 1953, when Casino Royale was published, many items of food were still rationed,[1] and Bond was "the ideal antidote to Britain's postwar austerity, rationing and the looming premonition of lost power".[49] This extravagance was more noteworthy with his contemporary readers for Bond eating exotic, Sony VAIO PCG-61412V Battery local foods when abroad,[50] at a time when most of his readership did not travel abroad.[51] On 1 April 1958 Fleming wrote to The Manchester Guardian in defence of his work, referring to that paper's review of Dr. No.[17] Whilst referring to Bond's food and wine consumption as "gimmickery",Sony VAIO PCG-71112M Battery Fleming bemoaned that "it has become an unfortunate trade-mark. I myself abhor Wine-and-Foodmanship. My own favourite food is scrambled eggs."[17] Fleming was so keen on scrambled eggs that he used his short story, "007 in New York" to provide his favourite recipe for the dish: in the story, Sony VAIO PCG-81111V Battery this came from the housekeeper of his friend Ivar Bryce, May, who gave her name to Bond's own housekeeper.[52] Smoking Bond is a heavy smoker, at one point smoking 70 cigarettes a day.[53] Bond has his cigarettes custom-made by Morland of Grosvenor Street, Sony VAIO PCG-81111V Battery mixing Balkan and Turkish tobacco and having a higher nicotine content than normal; the cigarettes have three gold bands on the filter.[54] Bond carried his cigarettes in a widegunmetal cigarette case which carried fifty; he also used a black oxidised Ronson lighter.[55] Sony VAIO PCG-81212M Battery The cigarettes were the same as Fleming's, who had been buying his at Morland since the 1930s; the three gold bands on the filter were added during the war to mirror his naval Commander's rank.[54] On average, Bond smokes sixty cigarettes a day, although he cut back to around twenty five a day after his visit to a health farm in Thunderball: Sony VAIO PCG-81212V Battery ] Fleming himself smoked up to 80 cigarettes a day.[56] Drugs Bond occasionally supplements his alcohol consumption with the use of other drugs, for both functional and recreational reasons: Moonraker sees Bond consumes a quantity of the amphetamine benzedrine accompanied by champagne, Sony VAIO PCG-51111M Battery Sony VAIO VPCS13X9E/B battery before his bridge game with Sir Hugo Drax (also consuming a carafe of vintage Riga vodka and a vodka martini);[57] he also uses the drug for stimulation on missions, such as swimming across Shark Bay in Live and Let Die,[58] or remaining awake and alert when threatened in the Dreamy Pines Motor Court in The Spy Who Loved Me.[59] Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery   Attitudes According to academic Jeremy Black, Bond is written as a complex character, even though he was also often the voice of Fleming's prejudices.[60] The output of the prejudices, combined with the tales of Bond's actions, Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery led journalist Yuri Zhukov to write an article in 1965 for the Soviet daily newspaper Pravda, describing Bond's values: It was part of his profession to kill people. He had never liked doing it and when he had to kill he did it as well as he knew how and forgot about it. Sony VAIO VPCF13M8E/B battery As a secret agent who held the rare double-O prefix—the licence to kill in the Secret Service—it was his duty to be as cool about death as a surgeon. If it happened, it happened. Regret was unprofessional—worse, it was a death-watch beetle in the soul. Another general attitude and prejudice of Fleming's that Bond gives voice to includes his approach to homosexuality. Sony VAIO VPCF13Z0E/B battery Despite a number of gay friends, includingNoël Coward and his editor, William Plomer, Fleming said that his books were "written for warm-blooded heterosexuals".[67] His attitude went further, with Bond opining that homosexuals were "a herd of unhappy sexual misfits – barren and full of frustrations, Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/L battery the women wanting to dominate and the men to be nannied", adding that "he was sorry for them, but he had no time for them."[68] Personal life Bond lives in a flat off the King's Road in Chelsea. His flat is looked after by an elderly Scottish housekeeper named May. Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/W battery May's name was taken from May Maxwell, the housekeeper of Fleming's close friend, the American Ivar Bryce.[52] In 1955 Bond earned around £2,000 a year net (£39,058 in 2012 pounds[69]), although when on assignment he worked on an unlimited expense account.[59] Sony VAIO VPCF22M1E battery Much of Fleming's own daily routine whilst working at The Sunday Times was woven into the Bond stories[70] and he summarised it at the beginning of Moonraker: ...elastic office hours from around ten to six; lunch, generally in the canteen; evenings spent playing cards in the company of a few close friends, or at Crockford's; Sony VAIO VPCF11M1E/H battery or making love, with rather cold passion, to one of three similarly disposed married women; weekends playing golf for high stakes at one of the clubs near London. Only once in the series does Fleming install a partner for Bond in his flat, with the arrival of Tiffany Case, following Bond's mission to the US in Diamonds Are Forever. Sony VAIO VPCF13M0E/B battery By the start of the following book, From Russia, With Love, Case had left to marry an American.[59] Bond was married only once, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, to Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo, but their marriage was short-lived as she was killed on their wedding day by Ernst Stavro Blofeld.[72] Sony VAIO VPCYB2M1E battery   In the penultimate novel of the series, You Only Live Twice, Bond suffers from amnesia and has a relationship with an Ama diving girl, Kissy Suzuki. As a result of the relationship Kissy becomes pregnant, although she does not reveal this to Bond before he leaves the island.[73] Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E battery   Abilities From Casino Royale to From Russia, with Love Bond's preferred weapon is a .25 ACP Beretta automatic pistol carried in a light-weightchamois leather holster.[74] However Fleming was contacted by a Bond enthusiast and gun expert, Geoffrey Boothroyd, Sony VAIO VPCY11M1E battery who criticised Fleming's choice of firearm for Bond[75] and suggested a Walther PPK 7.65mm instead.[76] Fleming used the suggestion in Dr. No, also taking advice that it should be used with the Berns-Martin triple draw shoulder holster.[77] By way of thanks, the MI6 Armourer who gives Bond his gun was given the name Major Boothroyd, and is introduced by M as "the greatest small-arms expert in the world".Sony VAIO VPCS12L9E/B battery   Kingsley Amis, in The James Bond Dossier, noted that although Bond is a very good shot and the best in the Secret Service, he is still beaten by the instructor, something that added realism to Bond's character.[79] Amis identified a number of skills where Bond is very good, but is still beatable by others. Sony VAIO VPCF11S1E/B battery These included skiing, hand-to-hand combat, underwater swimming and golf.[80] Driving was also an ability Amis identified where Bond was good, but others were better;[80] one of those who is a better driver than Bond is Sir Hugo Drax, who causes Bond to write off his battleship-grey Bentley 4½ Litre with an Amherst Villierssupercharger.[81] Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E/R Battery Bond subsequently drives a Mark II Continental Bentley, which he uses in the remaining books of the series,[82] although he is issued an Aston Martin DB Mark III with a homing device during the course of Goldfinger. John Gardner In 1981 writer John Gardner was approached by the Fleming estate and asked to write a continuation novel for Bond.[83] Sony VAIO VPCF23P1E Battery Although he initially almost turned the series down,[84] Gardner subsequently wrote fourteen original novels and two novelizations of the films between Licence Renewed in 1981[85] and COLD in 1996.[86] With the influence of the American publishers, Putnam's, the Gardner novels showed an increase in the number of Americanisms used in the book, Sony VAIO VPCF23N1E Battery such as a waiter wearing "pants", rather than trousers, in The Man from Barbarossa.[83] James Harker, writing in The Guardian, considered that the Gardner books were "dogged by silliness",[83] giving examples of Scorpius, where much of the action is set in Chippenham, and Win, Lose or Die, Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/L Battery where "Bond gets chummy with an unconvincing Maggie Thatcher".[83] Ill health forced Gardner to retire from writing the Bond novels in 1996.[87] Gardner stated that he wanted "to bring Mr Bond into the 1980s",[88] although he retained the ages of the characters as they were when Fleming had left them.[40] Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/G battery Even though Gardner kept the ages the same, he made Bond grey at the temples as a nod to the passing of the years.[89] Other 1980s effects also took place, with Bond smoking low-tar cigarettes[90] and becoming increasingly health conscious.[91] The return of Bond in 1981 saw media reports on the more politically correct Bond and his choice of car—a Saab 900 Turbo;[87] Sony VAIO VPCF24M1E battery Gardner later put him in a Bentley Mulsanne Turbo.[92] Gardner also updated Bond's firearm: under Gardner, Bond is initially issued with the Browning 9mm before changing to a Heckler & Koch VP70and then a Heckler & Koch P7.[40] Bond is also revealed to have taken part in the 1982 Falklands War.Sony VAIO VPCS11X9E/B Battery Gardner updated Fleming's characters and used contemporary political leaders in his novels; he also used the high-tech apparatus of Q Branch from the films,[94] although Jeremy Black observed that Bond is more reliant on technology than his own individual abilities.[95] Gardner's series linked Bond to the Fleming novels rather than the film incarnations and referred to events covered in the Fleming stories.[96] Sony VAIO VPCS123FGB Battery   Raymond Benson Following the retirement of John Gardner, Raymond Benson took over as Bond author in 1996; as the first American author of Bond it was a controversial choice.[97] Benson had previously written the non-fiction The James Bond Bedside Companion, first published in 1984.[98] Sony VAIO VPCS125EC Battery Benson's first work was a short story, "Blast From the Past", published in 1997.[99] By the time he moved on to other projects in 2002, Benson had written six Bond novels, three novelizations and three short stories.[100] His final Bond work was The Man with the Red Tattoo, published in 2002. Sony VAIO VPCS128EC Battery   Benson followed Gardner's pattern of setting Bond in the contemporary timeframe of the 1990s[103] and, according to Jeremy Black, had more echoes of Fleming's style than John Gardner,[104] he also changed Bond's gun back to the Walther PPK,[99] put him behind the wheel of a Jaguar XK8[92] and made him swear more.[105] Sony VAIO VPCS129GC Battery James Harker noted that "whilst Fleming's Bond had been an Express reader; Benson's is positively red top. He's the first to have group sex...and the first to visit a prostitute",[83] whilst Black notes an increased level of crudity lacking in either Fleming or Gardner. Sony VAIO VPCS12C7E/B Battery   Kingsley Amis In 1967, four years after Fleming's death, his literary executors, Glidrose Productions, approached Kingsley Amis and offered him £10,000 (£135,353 in 2012 pounds[69]) to write the first continuation Bond novel.[83] The result was Colonel Sun published in 1968 under the pen-name Robert Markham.[106] Sony VAIO VPCS12L9E/B Battery Journalist James Harker noted that although the book was not literary, it was stylish.[83] Raymond Benson noted that Bond's character and events from previous novels were all maintained in Colonel Sun,[107] saying "he is the same darkly handsome man first introduced in Casino Royale.[108] Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B Battery   Sebastian Faulks After Gardner and Benson had followed Amis, there was a gap of six years until Sebastian Faulks was commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications to write a new Bond novel, which was released on 28 May 2008, the one hundredth anniversary of Ian Fleming's birth.[109] Sony VAIO VPCY115FGS Battery The book—entitled Devil May Care—was published in the UK by Penguin Books and by Doubleday in the US.[110] Faulks ignored the timeframe established by Gardner and Benson and instead reverted to that used by Fleming and Amis, basing his novel in the 1960s;[103] he also managed to use a number of the cultural touchstones of the sixties in the book.[111] Sony VAIO VPCY115FX/BI Battery Faulks was true to Bond's original character and background too, and provided "a Flemingesque hero"[103] who drove a battleship grey 1967 T-series Bentley.[92] Jeffery Deaver On 26 May 2011, American writer Jeffery Deaver, commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications, released Carte Blanche.[112] Sony VAIO VPCY115FXBI Battery Deaver restarted the chronology of Bond, separate from the timelines any of the previous authors, by stating he was born in 1980;[113] the novel also saw Bond in a post-9/11 agency, independent of either MI5 or MI6. The films didn't influence me at all and nor did the continuation novels. Sony VAIO VPCY118EC Battery I wanted to get back to the original Bond who's dark and edgy, has quite a sense of irony and humour and is extremely patriotic and willing to sacrifice himself for Queen and country. He is extremely loyal but he has this dark pall over him because he's a hired killer - and he wrestles with that. I've always found him to be quite a representative of the modern era. Sony VAIO VPCY118GX/BI Battery   Whilst the chronology changed, Deaver included a number of elements from the Fleming novels, including Bond's tastes for food and wine, his gadgets and "the rather preposterous names of some of the female characters."[113] William Boyd On 11 April 2012, the Fleming estate announced that William Boyd would write the next Bond novel, due for release in the autumn of 2013; the publishers will be Jonathan Cape. Sony VAIO VPCY119FJ/S Battery   In 2005 author and comedian Charlie Higson released SilverFin, the first of five novels and one short story in the life of a young James Bond;[117] his final work was the short story "A Hard Man to Kill", released as part of the non-fiction work, Danger Society: The Young Bond Dossier, the companion book to the Young Bond series.[118] Sony VAIO VPCY11AFJ Battery Young Bond is set in the 1930s, which would fit the chronology with that of Fleming. Higson stated that he was instructed by the Fleming estate to ignore all other interpretations of Bond, except the original Fleming version.[121] As the background to Bond's childhood, Higson used Bond's obituary in You Only Live Twice as well as his own and Fleming's childhoods.[122] Sony VAIO VPCY11AGJ Battery In forming the early Bond character, Higson created the origins of some of Bond's character traits, including his love of cars and fine wine. Adaptations of Bond started early in Fleming's writings, with CBS paying him $1,000[123] ($8,654 in 2012 dollars[124]) to adapt his first novel, Sony VAIO VPCY11AHJ Battery Casino Royale, into a one-hour television adventure;[125] this was broadcast on 21 October 1954.[126] The Bond character, played byBarry Nelson, was changed to "Card Sense" Jimmy Bond, an American agent working for "Combined Intelligence".[127] In 1957 the Daily Express newspaper adapted Fleming's stories into comic strip format.[128] Sony VAIO VPCY11AVJ Battery In order to help the artists, Fleming commissioned a sketch to show how he saw Bond; illustrator John McLusky considered Fleming's version too "outdated" and "pre-war" and changed Bond to give him a more masculine look.[129] In 1962 Eon Productions, the company of Canadian Harry Saltzman and American Albert R. Sony VAIO VPCY11M1E/S Battery "Cubby" Broccoli released the first cinema adaptation of an Ian Fleming novel, Dr. No, featuring Sean Connery as 007.[130] Connery was the first of seven actors to play Bond on the cinema screen, six of whom appeared in the Eon series of films. As well as looking different, each of the actors has interpreted the role of Bond in a different way. Sony VAIO VPCY11S1E Battery   007: Nightfire (also released as James Bond 007: Nightfire) is a first-person shooter video game featuring the character of the British secret agent James Bond and a sequel to Agent Under Fire, published by Electronic Arts in 2002. 007: NightFire was developed by Eurocom for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Sony VAIO VPCY11V9E/S Battery and Xbox video game consoles. Gearbox Software developed the game for Windows using a very heavily modified GoldSRC engine (derived from the Opposing Forcefork, also developed by Gearbox), which Aspyr later re-released for the Mac. The computer versions are substantially different from the console versions, featuring different missions and a modified story line. Sony VAIO VPCY218EC/BI Battery In 2003 Electronic Arts released NightFire for the Game Boy Advance, this time developed by JV Games. The game marked Pierce Brosnan's fourth appearance as James Bond before the release of his fourth and final Bond filmDie Another Day. His likeness was featured in the game, but not his voice, which was provided by Maxwell Caulfield. Sony VAIO VPCY218EC/G Battery   Overall there are many weapons that the player can carry including grenades of various sorts and other types of explosives. In addition, there are numerous amounts of mounted weapons found throughout the game. As with previous James Bond games, the weapons that appear are based on actual weapons, Sony VAIO VPCY218EC/L Battery but with the names changed. Some weapons appear in the console version but not the PC version, and vice-versa. Each version of the game differs significantly from the others. The PC version, for example, has fewer levels than the console versions and does not implement driving mode. Sony VAIO VPCY218EC/P Battery It begins the plot right at Drake's Austrian castle, skipping over the French mission. Also, in this version, Rook dies much earlier on, in the astronaut training facility that Bond infiltrates. The Game Boy Advance version resembles the PC NightFire more than the console versions. However, the very general overall storyline and characters remain the same in all versions. Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/L Battery   Multiplayer In the multiplayer mode of Nightfire players can play in many different levels, including Fort Knox, from Goldfinger, Atlantis and the sub docking pen from The Spy Who Loved Me, and many Nightfire related levels, including Drake's castle, Drake's underwater base, and Drake's secret missile silo. Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/P Battery Other levels include Skyrail and Ravine. The player may choose to play against AI bots with customizable reaction time, speed, and health. The amount of usable bots vary in the console version. In the Gamecube and Xbox version, up to six bots may be used. In the PlayStation 2 version, up to four bots may be used and up to four humans can play. Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/SI Battery In the PC version, up to 12 bots may be used. The PC version also has an online multiplayer mode. Some medals obtained will unlock new characters. Notable characters included from previous James Bond films includeFrancisco Scaramanga and Nick Nack from The Man with the Golden GunSony VAIO VPCF11S1E Battery May Day and Max Zorin from A View to a Kill, Jawsfrom The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, Elektra King and Renard from The World Is Not Enough, Auric Goldfinger andOddjob from Goldfinger, and Baron Samedi from Live and Let Die. Players can customize multiplayer settings before playing. Sony VAIO VPCF11S1E/B Battery However, one disadvantage to this is that the game will not save the alterations players make to the multiplayer mode. The game's prologue mission starts in Paris, France, with James Bond (voiced by Maxwell Caulfield with the likeness of Pierce Brosnan) Sony VAIO VPCF11Z1E Battery helping French Intelligence operative Dominique Paradis evade a gang chase while chasing a truck with a stolen nuclear weapon, before continuing in his car. After stopping the truck from blowing up the Eiffel Tower, Dominique and James celebrate New Year's Eve. Sony VAIO VPCF11Z1E/BI Battery   The British Government sends Bond undercover to a party in industrialist Raphael Drake's Austrian castle. M (voiced by Samantha Eggar) believes that the party is a cover for the exchange of a missile guidance chip between Raphael Drake and Alexander Mayhew, who manages the Japanese branch of Drake's industry, Sony VAIO VPCF11ZHJ Battery Phoenix International, and had stolen the chip from the United States. Phoenix is believed to be a front for weapon smuggling. M gives Bond the instruction for 007 to rondevous with CIA agent Zoe Nightshade and Dominique, who is posing as Drake's mistress. While Zoe distracts the guards, Bond makes his way to the exchange and steals the chip. Sony VAIO VPCF127HGBI Battery Agents Nightshade and 007 make an try to make an escape on a cable car, when Drake's bodyguard, Rook, attacks the cable car with a rocket-launching helicopter. Bond shoots down the attacking helicopter using rockets found in the cable car. James and Zoe then escape Drake's forces in an armored snowmobile before continuing in James' car. Sony VAIO VPCF137HG/BI Battery They rendezvous with Q (voiced by Gregg Berger), who takes them out of Austria. After the breach, Drake threatens to kill Mayhew, should the operation fail. Mayhew contacts MI6, saying he will provide vital information if Bond comes to his rescue. At his Japanese estate, Mayhew is attacked by Drake's men, consisting of Japanese thugs. Sony VAIO VPCS111FM/S Battery Bond fights his way through the estate and manages to obtain a file from Mayhew's safe. As they are prepared to make an escape from the estate, Mayhew is killed by a ninja. The file leads Bond to Mayhew's office at the Phoenix Building in Tokyo. Bond is able to infiltrate the building while the guards are changing shifts and secures official NightFire documents. Sony VAIO VPCS115EC Battery He is then attacked by Drake's men before Dominique provides a distraction which allows Bond to escape via parachute off the roof of the building. The NightFire documents lead Bond to a nuclear power plant being decommissioned by Phoenix International. Bond retrieves evidence of Drake's activities and escapes. Sony VAIO VPCS115FG Battery However, he is then double crossed and captured by Kiko, Mayhew's former bodyguard, and turned over to Drake. On the top of the Phoenix building, Drake plans to kill Bond and Dominique, who has been discovered as a mole. Dominique is kicked off the rooftop and killed by Kiko. Sony VAIO VPCS117GG Battery Bond escapes to the ground level before being saved by Australian Intelligence agent Alura McCall. M sends Bond and Alura to Drake's private island, where Drake has set up a jamming signal. The pair infiltrate the island and eliminate Drake's defenses. Sony VAIO VPCS117GGB Battery M makes Bond aware of the UN, EU, and NATO forces arriving on the island to dismantle remaining enemy combatants. Bond makes his way to Drake's underground silo, fighting off Kiko before entering one of three space shuttles intending to capture the Space Defense Platform. Sony VAIO VPCS118EC Battery Kiko incinerates in the blast pit when Bond's space shuttle launches. Bond reaches the U.S. Space Defense Platform, where Drake is. He successfully sends all eight missiles off course, saving millions of lives, and causes Drake's laser weapon to malfunction, leading to a huge explosion. Finally, Bond kills Drake. Sony VAIO VPCS119FJ/B Battery As the station goes up in flames, Bond blasts from an escape pod and goes back down to Earth, where M informs him that astronomers from around the globe are reporting "unexpected meteor showers" (which is actually the debris of the now-destroyed Space Defense Platform). Sony VAIO VPCS119GC Battery   Characters Alexander Mayhew: The man in charge of the Phoenix International properties in Japan. When he betrays Drake, Bond tries to protect him from Drake's Yakuza thugs after failing to protect the stolen missile guidance module back in Austria Sony VAIO VPCS11AFJ Battery (the disappearance of this item was the reason for Drake falling out with Mayhew), but Mayhew dies when a ninja shows up and stabs him in the back with a samuri sword. Mayhew is voiced by Ian Abercrombie. Sony VAIO VPCS11AGJ Battery   Alura McCall: An Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) agent who comes to Bond's aid in Tokyo and goes with him to Drake's island. She provides critical aid to Bond when he has to stop the nukes from launching of the space defense platform. She is first seen when collecting Bond from the Phoenix International building in Tokyo, Sony VAIO VPCS11AHJ Battery giving him a lift from the building in her red sports car. Alura is voiced by Kimberly Davies. Armitage Rook: The head of security for Raphael Drake, and like many previous henchmen, he has the abnormal ability to survive the most dangerous scenarios. He has a big size of 6'6" (198 cm) and is massive built. Sony VAIO VPCS11AVJ Battery He is first seen at a party in the Austrian Alps hosted at Drake's castle. When 007 and CIA agent Zoe Nightshade witness a secret meeting, Rook pursues them in a Mil Mi-24 Hind helicopter which is subsequently shot down by Bond. Sony VAIO VPCS11J7E/B Battery Rook manages to survive and returns later at the nuclear power plant not far from Tokyo in the mission "Chain Reaction" and also at Drake's Phoenix Base, bearing a scarred left eye and armed with a state of the art Samurai laser gun. Despite this advantage, he is killed while engaged in an intense firefight with Bond. Sony VAIO VPCS11M1E/W Battery In the PC version of the game, he dies when he is killed by the lethal blades of a huge fan inside a wind tunnel-like astronaut training facility; in the console version, he is killed much later on in the plot by Bond while inside Drake's underground shuttle hangar. In both variations, he dies while fighting Bond. Rook is voiced by Richard Whiten. Sony VAIO VPCS11V9E Battery   Dominique Paradis: A French Intelligence agent met by James Bond whilst being saved in the mission "Paris Prelude". After she celebrates New Year with James, she then arrives the mission of the party to infiltrate Drake's Austrian Castle, in that she is trying to have a sort of relationship with Drake. Sony VAIO VPCS11V9E/B Battery Bond meets up with her later, in retrieving information on Drake, with a brief kiss interrupted by Zoe Nightshade. She then arrives later in the level "Nightshift", and after spotting and trying to assist Bond with infiltrating Drake's Phoenix Japan Headquarters. However, Drake later reveals that a hidden camera allowed to see this. Sony VAIO VPCCW2AHJ Battery Later, Kiko brings Bond to the top of the building, and Drake reveals that he knows of Dominique's true loyalties. Kiko takes her to the edge of the helipad to execute her, but Dominique knocks her gun away and engages her in a brief fist fight. Unfortunately, she loses the fight and is kicked off the building by Kiko, and falls to her death to the lobby floor. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E Battery It should be noted though, that her fight with Kiko created enough of a distraction to allow Bond to escape. Dominique is voiced by Lena Reno. Makiko Hayashi (or just "Kiko"): Alexander's personal female bodyguard, very skilled in martial arts. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E/B Battery She originally appears to be working with Bond and helps him to penetrate the Japanese branch of Phoenix International after Mayhew is murdered on Drake's orders. However, her true allegiance is revealed when she shoots Bond with a tranquiliser gun at the Tokyo nuclear plant; she then takes him to Drake. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E/L Battery While on the top of the Phoenix Building, Kiko and Dominique get into a fight after Bond attempts to escape. During the fight, Kiko kicks Dominique Paradis off of the Phoenix Building's heli-pad, sending her down to the lobby floor and killing her instantly. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E/P Battery Kiko continues to serve Drake from then on and attempts to kill Bond at Drake's island fortress by using a trap which drops the bridge leading to the shuttle, sending him in the shuttle launch chambers. However, Bond takes cover in the blast chambers and kills Kiko's men, forcing her to retreat. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E/R Battery Bond activates the same trap Kiko had used on him only minutes before, sending Kiko into the launch chamber; Bond activates the shuttle and boards it. Kiko is incinerated in the launch chamber when she is unable to reach a blast chamber before the door closes. Kiko is voiced by Tamlyn Tomita. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S1E/W Battery   Raphael Drake: The Brazilian-Russian dual heritage owner of Phoenix International Corporation, is the main villain in the game. He poses as a humanitarian and an avowed opponent of the use of nuclear weapons, but in reality he is hoarding dozens of nuclear weapons for his own future use. Sony VAIO VPCCW2S5C CN1 Battery He tries to take over world by hijacking space defense platform and launching its arsenal of nuclear weapons against major NATO bases in an attempt to wipe out global security. He is killed on the space station by Bond, who shoots him with a Phoenix Samurai laser gun before escaping the space station in a rocket, Sony VAIO VPCF112FX/B Battery with Drake's corpse left floating into space as the rocket launches and the station explodes. Drake is voiced by Michael Ensign. Zoe Nightshade: A CIA agent who helps Bond in Drake's castle. Zoe previously worked with Bond on his last mission (Agent Under Fire). Sony VAIO VPCF115FG/B Battery She is first seen in Nightfire when Bond sneaks into the library, where Bond also meets Dominique Paradis. After Paradis gives Bond the key to Drake's secret meeting, Zoe and Bond talk briefly about the mission, however Zoe appears to be jealous of Bond and Paradis's relationship. Sony VAIO VPCF116FGBI Battery Zoe leaves and attempts to create a distraction for Bond but is captured under Rook's suspicion, although this may have been the distraction she was planning, and taken to the cable car outside the castle for interrogation. She apparently frees herself, as she is later seen defending it from Drake's men. Bond later defeats Rook, who is in a helicopter, from the cable car. Sony VAIO VPCF117FJ/W Battery Bond and Zoe escape by sliding down the cable car line and together they find a garage with armored snowmobiles. Bond and Zoe wake up the next morning in a small MI6 safehouse. It appears that Zoe and Bond had sex the night before. After shaking off Drake's men, Zoe and Bond get into his Vanquish car and rush to rendezvous with Q. Sony VAIO VPCF117HG/BI Battery This is the last time Zoe is seen in the series, as Alura McCall is later assigned to help Bond in his mission. She is well aware of Bond's relationships with women, as seen by her teasing nature when she encounter Bond and Dominique in Drake's castle. Zoe is voiced by Jeanne Mori. Reviews of the game have been positive. Sony VAIO VPCF118FJ/W Battery Many critics mentioned, it had a well thought out and consistent plot. Some say it is the best 007 game since GoldenEye 007 and that it has similarities with Moonraker's story. Many reviewers praised the accurate James Bond model, as they said it is very realistic. It proved popular with customers and was re-released for the PlayStation 2 in December 2004 a Greatest Hits edition. Sony VAIO VPCF119FC Battery The game has sold over four million copies, surpassed only by Goldeneye and Agent Under Fire. Reviews toward the game have also pointed to the realistic animation of the James Bond character. In addition to this, graphically most users have also positively commented on the fact that James Bond and Pierce Brosnan look and move so much alike. Sony VAIO VPCF119FC/BI Battery However, while the reviews have been generally positive, some critics believe that the main negative aspect of the game is its relatively short length. Critics also noted that Nightfire does attempt to steer away from previous Bond games (notably GoldenEye) and add a more interesting story line. Sony VAIO VPCF119FJ/BI Battery Critics also derided the game's bots, as having difficulty navigating through the multiplayer maps; because of this, bots are not available in the map Ravine at all.[3] In 2008, PC Games Hardware included Alura McCall, Makiko Hayashi, Dominique Paradis and Zoe Nightshade among the 112 most important female characters in games. Sony VAIO VPCF11AFJ Battery   GoldenEye 007 is a 2010 first-person shooter video game developed by Eurocom and published by Activision for the Wiivideo game console,[1] with a handheld version for Nintendo DS developed by n-Space.[6] It is a reimagining of the 1995James Bond film GoldenEye, and the 1997 Nintendo 64 video game GoldenEye 007. Sony VAIO VPCF11AGJ Battery The game was officially announced by Nintendo at their E3 2010 conference presentation.[7] The game was released on November 2, 2010 in tandem with anotherBond game, Blood Stone. It took on the elements of a modern shooter while retaining a classic name. A remastering of the Wii game was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in 2011, re-titled as GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. Sony VAIO VPCF11AHJ Battery   Although Pierce Brosnan starred as Bond in GoldenEye and was featured in the 1997 game, subsequent Bond actor Daniel Craig's likeness and voice are featured in the 2010 game and the plot has been modified to fit with the current style ofJames Bond films. Judi Dench, who has portrayed M since GoldenEye, Sony VAIO VPCF11JFX/B Battery reprises her role for the game, though in voice only. With the exception of M, all other main characters from the film have had their appearances altered, though they still retain their original names.[1] Unlike the original video game and therefore movie, Sony VAIO VPCF11M1E Battery the whole story takes place after the Cold War due to the Soviet Union's replacement by the Russian Federation, so the story does not jump nine years ahead after the opening sequence. The story is set some time after the events of Quantum of Solace it begins as James Bond (007) and Alec Trevelyan (006) Sony VAIO VPCF11M1E/H Battery (Elliot Cowan) are on a mission infiltrating a chemical weapons facility in Arkhangelsk, Russia, which is believed to be the source of weapons used by a terrorist cell to target British embassies around the world. The mission goes awry when Trevelyan is caught and apparently shot by General Ourumov (Laurence Possa). Sony VAIO VPCF11MFX/B Battery Bond escapes by detonating explosives he had placed throughout the facility before stealing a motorcycle and chasing a plane over the edge of a cliff, fleeing Arkhangelsk. Later, a phone call intercepted from Ourumov connects him to Russian gangster Valentin Zukovsky (Alec Newman) as Ourumov attempts to acquire a helicopter that has been modified to survive an electromagnetic pulse. Sony VAIO VGN-SR93YS Battery Bond travels to Barcelona, and through a local agent placed inside Zukovsky's nightclub, Bond is able to make contact with the Russian and enquires about the helicopter. Zukovsky directs him to an arms fair in Dubai before being killed by Xenia Onatopp (Kate Magowan), disguised as a waitress in Zukovsky's club. Sony VAIO VGN-SR94FS Battery   Bond tracks Onatopp to the same arms fair Zukovsky mentioned, but is unable to stop Onatopp and Ourumov from stealing the EMP-resistant helicopter. He is, however, able to plant his smartphone on-board, and MI6 is able to track the helicopter to Severnaya, a remote base in Siberia which the Russians claim is being used to observe the effects of climate change. Sony VAIO VGN-SR94GS Battery In reality, it is a tracking system for "GoldenEye", a series of nuclear weapons in orbit designed to disable an enemy target with an electromagnetic pulse upon detonation. Bond is unable to stop the theft of the GoldenEye weapons satellite, with Ourumov detonating one of the satellites in orbit so as to cover up the theft. Sony VAIO VGN-SR94HS Battery Negotiating his way through the lower levels of the Severnaya facility, Bond rescues Natalya Simonova (Kirsty Mitchell) before being arrested by the Russian army. Believing Bond and Natalya to be responsible for the GoldenEye blast, Russian Defense Minister Dmitri Mishkin (Ed Stoppard) Sony VAIO VGN-SR94VS Battery interrogates the two in St. Petersburg, but is interrupted by Ourumov - now working for The Janus Group, a shadowy PMC, murders Mishkin and abducts Natalya. Bond pursues Ourumov through the Russian military archives, before hijacking a tank and chasing Ourumov. Ourumov leads Bond to a rail yard where he boards a train with Xenia. Sony VAIO VPC CW2MFX/PU Battery Bond derails their carriage by crashing into it with the tank, leading to a confrontation with Ourumov over his plan for the GoldenEye satellite. He attempts to pit Ourumov and Xenia against one another, but Xenia betrays Ourumov and kills him. Bond is able to help Natalya off the train before it explodes and Natalya admits she overheard Ourumov arranging a meeting with someone for that night. Sony VAIO VPC S11V9E/B Battery   Bond goes to the meeting in Ourumov's place and is shocked to learn that Trevelyan survived his execution at the hands of Ourumov and is now Janus, the head of the Janus crime syndicate and the mastermind behind the GoldenEye theft. Trevelyan expresses disdain for his previous life, claiming that where they once fought for Queen and country, Sony VAIO VPCB119GJ/B Battery their cause had become corrupted by bankers and financiers seeking to make billions of dollars in profit by manipulating the course of governments around the world. He then leaves with Natalya, who is instrumental to his plan now that Ourumov is dead. MI6 traces Trevelyan to a solar energy station in Nigeria. Sony VAIO VPCB11AGJ Battery Bond is able to infiltrate the facility, killing Xenia in the process. Trevelyan's plan is to steal billions of dollars from all the banks in London and everything the banks have touched (stock markets, financial records, etc.) before detonating the second GoldenEye satellite, erasing all evidence of the theft; Sony VAIO VPCB11AVJ Battery Bond, however, is able to trick him into destroying his own supercomputers before telling Natalya to deorbit the satellite. Trevelyan then makes his way to the top of the satellite array to defend the override module that will sabotage it; after fighting Trevelyan, Bond is able to overload the facility control room, causing the entire facility to collapse around them. Sony VAIO VPCB11V9E Battery Bond shoots Trevelyan, sending him to his death over the edge of the tower. Natalya and Bond escape the base by helicopter, with the couple kissing in the mission's aftermath. While GoldenEye 007 is a re-imagining of the film, the game does have noticeable differences. Levels have been altered to reflect the game's modified story. Sony VAIO VPCB11X9E Battery According to Craig Harris of IGN, "GoldenEye still retains the basics of GoldenEye's story, but retells it in a way that makes sense with Daniel Craig's interpretation of James Bond."[7] Likewise, the game features modern game elements to coincide with other modern first person shooters, such as destructible environments and online multiplayer.[8] Sony VAIO VPCCW18FJ/P Battery   Eurocom has also added a few updated features while retaining some features from the original game. Instead of a watch, players use a mobile phone to scan documents, take photos, and communicate with MI6. The original GoldenEye 007 featured a cheat menu which is available from the start in the re-make.[9] Sony VAIO VPCCW18FJ/R Battery The game updates the AI-Bot system which is built upon Eurocom's previous game, Dead Space: Extraction. Each computer player possesses its own AI-bot system to make them dynamic and challenging. The game offers players several choices of controllers: Wii Remote with Nunchuk, Wii Zapper, Sony VAIO VPCCW18FJ/W Battery Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, or a Nintendo GameCube controller. GoldenEye 007 also provides players using the Remote with Nunchuk or Wii Zapper with the ability to peer around cover by tilting the Nunchuk. The game includes twenty-five weapons based upon counterparts from the Bond franchise. Sony VAIO VPCCW19FJ/W Battery Multiplayer GoldenEye 007 features both offline split screen for up to four local players and online play for up to eight players. There are 10 multiplayer maps. There are four different game modes for offline multiplayer and nine different game modes for online multiplayer. Sony VAIO VPCCW1AFJ Battery Online multiplayer is provided through the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and though up to eight players can connect to a game remotely, only one local player is allowed at a time.[1] Multiplayer includes characters from the single player campaign, such as James Bond and Alec Trevelyan, Sony VAIO VPCCW1AHJ Battery as well as classic Bond-series characters including Jaws, Oddjob, andJulius No. Additionally, online multiplayer offers XP progression, unlockables and multipliers.[12] Split screen combat provides over a dozen modifiers, including Paintball Mode from the original game.[13] Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E Battery   During November 2006, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced that Nintendo was exploring the possibility of adding the Nintendo 64 classicGoldenEye 007 to the Virtual Console, despite a complicated situation in which the game's developer Rare is owned by Microsoft (producers of the rival Xbox 360console) Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E/B Battery and the video game rights to the James Bond franchise are held by Activision. He stated, "We would love to see it [on the Virtual Console], so we're exploring all the rights issues. On January 7, 2008, Xbox Evolved reported that an updated version of GoldenEye 007 would be released on Xbox Live Arcade. Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E/L Battery However on January 11, 2008, 1UP.com reported that a GoldenEye port (as opposed to a remake) had been in development at Rare for several months, but stated that the title would not be released on the Xbox Live Arcade since "Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on the financial side of things". Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E/P Battery Perfect Dark, a Nintendo 64 title which used the same engine as GoldenEye would later make it to Xbox Live Arcade, however. As of November 2011, Microsoft has made no comment on further effort to acquire the rights to the game and release GoldenEye 007 on XBLA.Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E/R Battery It was revealed at E3 2010 that a new Goldeneye video game would be released for the Wii in November 2010. GoldenEye 007 is built on a modified version of the game engine from another Wii game by Eurocom, Dead Space: Extraction.[16] Originally, Free Radical Design (now Crytek UK) were approached by Activision to develop the game because former Rare staff were working there, however the deal was never finalised.[17] Sony VAIO VPCCW1S1E/W Battery   Bond film producer Michael G. Wilson spoke in June 2010 about Daniel Craig's participation in revisiting the story from the original film. "When we first pitched the game to him, he was really excited about it. He thought the original game was great. Daniel plays a lot of games and... gives us a lot of good criticism. Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX/B Battery We'll show him what the plan is and he'll suggest changes and get very hands-on." Wilson went on to say that Craig is aware of the original game's impact, but that his on-screen interpretation of James Bond also required changes to the tone of the story and an increased physical nature to the gameplay.[18] Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX/L Battery   David Arnold, composer of every Bond film score since and including Tomorrow Never Dies, composed the game's score.[19][2] Nicole Scherzinger performs the title song, a cover version of the film's theme which was originally performed by Tina Turner.[2] The game's script is penned by Bruce Feirstein, the co-writer of theGoldenEye film,[1] Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX/R Battery who has described several changes made to update the story in the fifteen years since its release; for example, Alec Trevelyan's motivations have changed, as the character's backstory involving a Lienz Cossack father would make Trevelyan seventy-one years old in 2010, while Valentin Zukovsky no longer has any connection to the KGB. Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX/W Battery Feirstein also cited a sequence of the game set at a Dubai arms fair.[20] Rory Kinnear reprises his role from Quantum of Solace as Bill Tanner, M's Chief of Staff. Reception Reviews for GoldenEye 007 have been mostly positive. GameRankings's aggregated review score for the game is 83.77% as of May 4, 2011, based on 62 reviews, Sony VAIO VPCCW26EC Battery about 13% less than the original game.[21] IGN awarded the game a 9.0 out of 10 and an Editor's Choice Award, praising its multiplayer component and its well-crafted story while criticizing the lack of voice chat.[13] The reviewer, Craig Harris, concluded by acknowledging that the game—as of its release—is the Wii's best first person shooter.[13] Sony VAIO VPCCW26FX/B Battery Gaming Nexus gave GoldenEye 007 an A–, stating, "instead of standing in the originalGoldenEye's shadow, Eurocom has created a brand new game that is just as compelling and addictive as the original."[30]GameSpot reviewer Tom McShea also praised the game, awarding it an 8.5 out of 10.[25] Joystiq scored the game 4 out of 5.[31] Sony VAIO VPCCW28EC Battery Nintendo World Report awarded the game an 8.5/10, with the reviewer stating, "Frankly, I haven't seen a more impressive Wii shooter."[28] The Official Nintendo Magazine gave GoldenEye 007 a score of 90%.[29] GameTrailers scored the game at 8.6 of 10, indicating that while most aspects are well-done, Sony VAIO VPCCW28FJ/P Battery the game's performance suffers from inconsistent framerates, particularly during splitscreen play. They also derided the menus as "bland" and the "not very crisp" overall picture due to aliasing.[27] Digital Trends' gave the game 8 of 10, complaining of the enemy AI's simplistic strategies and lack of adaptability. Sony VAIO VPCCW28FJ/R Battery While the multiplayer gameplay was highly praised by the reviewer, the lack of voice chat was seen as a significant omission.[32] GamesRadar, although less positive, were still pleased with the result, awarding the game a 7 out of 10, stating that it was impossible for the game to live up to the original, Sony VAIO VPCCW28FJ/W Battery but that it was still "a damn fine, 'serious' shooter on the Wii, and that's saying something," adding that "even without the limited options for mature action for Wii owners,GoldenEye 007 is a solid game in its own right."[26] In contrast, however, Game Informer was less impressed, giving the game a 6.5/10, Sony VAIO VPCCW29FJ/W Battery calling it "a lackluster game that fails to hit the same high notes of the original, or keep pace with modern shooters". At the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, Activision unveiled GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, a remastering of the Wii game for the Xbox 360and PlayStation 3 consoles. Sony VAIO VPCCW2AFJ Battery The game features high-definition graphics due to running on a new game engine, an achievement system, new "Mi6 Ops Missions", and PlayStation Move compatibility for the PS3 version. On Sept. 14, 2011, Activisionannounced plans to release an exclusive PlayStation 3 bundle called "007: Sony VAIO VGN-SR41M/P Battery GoldenEye Reloaded Double 'O' Edition" which will include access to the downloadable character Hugo Drax.[35] The bundle will include a PlayStation Move motion controller, navigation controller, PlayStation Eye camera, and Sharp Shooter peripheral along with the game on Blu-ray Disc. Sony VAIO VGN-SR41M/S Battery The game was released on November 1, 2011 in North America and on November 4, 2011 in Europe. Multiplayer GoldenEye 007 features online play for up to 16 players. There are 14 multiplayer maps. There are nine different game modes for online multiplayer. Sony VAIO VGN-SR49VN/H Battery Online multiplayer can be used by Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and though up to 16 players can connect to a game remotely, only one local player is allowed at a time. Multiplayer includes characters from the single player campaign, such as James Bond and Alec Trevelyan, Sony VAIO VGN-SR51B/P Battery as well as classic Bond-series characters including Jaws, Oddjob, and Julius No. Additionally, online multiplayer offers XP progression, unlockables and multipliers.
