Jurassic Park (film)

Jurassic Park is a 1993 American epic science fiction adventure thriller film[2] directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. It stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, Martin Ferrero and Bob Peck. Sony VAIO PCG-3B1M Battery
The film centers on the fictional Isla Nublar near Costa Rica in the Central American Pacific Coast, where a billionaire philanthropist and a small team of genetic scientists have created an amusement park of cloned dinosaurs.
Before Crichton's book was even published, many studios had already begun bidding to acquire the picture rights. Sony VAIO PCG-3C1T Battery
Spielberg, with the backing of Universal Studios, acquired the rights before publication in 1990, and Crichton was hired for an additional $500,000 to adapt the novel for the screen. David Koepp wrote the final draft, which left out much of the novel's exposition and violence, and made numerous changes to the characters. Filming locations were in both Hawaiiand California.
Jurassic Park is regarded as a landmark in the use of computer-generated imagery, and received positive reviews from most critics. During its release, the film grossed over $900 million worldwide, Sony VAIO PCG-3G2M Battery
becoming the highest grossing film released up to that time (surpassing E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and surpassed four years later by Titanic), and it is currently the21st-highest-grossing feature film (adjusted for inflation, it is the 20th-highest-grossing film in North America). Sony VAIO PCG-5R1M Battery
It is the highest grossing film produced by Universal and directed by Steven Spielberg. It won the Academy Award for Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Because of the film's success, two sequels were made: The Lost World: Jurassic Park directed by Spielberg as well, Sony VAIO PCG-7141M Battery
which was released on May 23, 1997, and Jurassic Park III, directed by Joe Johnston, which was released on July 18, 2001.
Eccentric billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), CEO of InGen, has recently created Jurassic Park: Sony VAIO PCG-7143M Battery
a theme park populated with dinosaurs cloned from the DNA extracted from insects preserved in prehistoric amber.
After a park worker is killed by a Velociraptor, Hammond's investors, represented by their lawyer Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero), Sony VAIO PCG-7151M Battery
demand that experts visit the park and verify that it is safe. Gennaro invites Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), a mathematician, while Hammond invites paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern). They are joined on the island by Hammond's two grandchildren: Sony VAIO PCG-7154M Battery
Tim (Joseph Mazzello) and Lex Murphy (Ariana Richards). Hammond asks Malcolm, Grant, and Sattler what their thoughts are about having recreated dinosaur species. The three of them engage in an intense philosophical debate about the ethics of having cloned extinct dinosaurs with Gennaro being the only one to express optimism. Sony VAIO PCG-7162M Battery
The group sets off to explore the park while Hammond observes his guests along with Head Technician Ray Arnold (Samuel L. Jackson) and his game warden, Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck).
During the exploration, Grant spots a sick Triceratops and the group gets out to investigate. Sony VAIO PCG-7181M Battery
With a storm heading in, everyone heads for their vehicles except for Sattler, who stays with the park doctor to look after the animal. Meanwhile, Jurassic Park's head computer programmer, Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight), is secretly in the employ of one of InGen's corporate rivals, and has been paid to steal dinosaur embryos. Sony VAIO PCG-41112M Battery
During his theft, Nedry hacks and deactivates the park's security system, allowing him access to the embryo storage. All electric fences around the park are powered off as a result, releasing a Tyrannosaurus. The T-Rex assaults the vehicle with the family inside. Gennaro, who fled the vehicle earlier, is eaten by the T-Rex. The family and Alan narrowly escape. Sony VAIO PCG-7153M Battery
Meanwhile, a fleeing Nedry crashes his Jeep. He decides to use the electric winch on the front of his Jeep to tie it to a tree that will bring him to the road to help him reach the dock. While Nedry is tying the winch around the tree, he encounters a Dilophosaurus, which he ignores due to its small size. Sony VAIO PCG-71312M Battery
As he is getting back in the Jeep, the creature screeches, unveils its frill, and spits venom at him, blinding him. Now blind, Nedry hits his head on the door, dropping the stolen dinosaur embryos. But when Nedry manages to get into the Jeep, the Dilophosaurus is inside and mauls and kills him. Sony VAIO PCG-7144M Battery
Sattler and Muldoon search for survivors of the Tyrannosaurus attack, but while they find Malcolm, Grant and the children are missing. As they try to look for the children deep inside the jungle, Malcolm realizes the Tyrannosaurus is near. He orders Sattler and Muldoon to flee, with the Tyrannosaurus chasing after them. Sony VAIO PCG-7191L Battery
The three of them are able to escape in their Jeep. Meanwhile, Grant and the children climb up a high tree to avoid the Tyrannosaurus, and in a distance from the tree, they can see a family of Brachiosaurus.
Still at the visitor's center and unable to decipher Nedry's code to reactivate the security fences, Sony VAIO PCG-3C1M Battery
Hammond, Arnold, Muldoon, Malcolm and Sattler decide to take the drastic measure of rebooting the entire park's computer and electrical network. Arnold refuses at first, worried that the park's network might not come back on at all, but Hammond tells him that people are dying. Sony VAIO PCG-3F1M Battery
The five shut down the park's grid and retreat to the emergency bunker, from where Arnold heads to the maintenance bunker to reboot the system. When he does not return, Sattler and Muldoon decide to head for the bunker. At the same time, Grant and the children discover a nest full of hatched eggs, indicating the dinosaurs are breeding on their own. Sony VAIO PCG-3H1M Battery
While walking, they run from a herd of Gallimimus and hide behind a collapsed tree trunk. While looking at the herd of the Gallimimus, the T-Rex appears eats one in pursuit which scares Lex but fascinates Tim.
As Muldoon and Sattler proceed to the maintenance bunker, Muldoon notices that they are being hunted by Velociraptors. Sony VAIO PCG-3J1M Battery
When Muldoon is about to shoot a raptor, another raptor appears and mauls him to death., while Sattler makes it to the bunker and restarts the park's systems. After Sattler turns the park's systems back on, she is attacked by a raptor hidden within some cables; she then discovers Arnold's severed arm and narrowly escapes the raptor. Sony VAIO PCG-8141M Battery
At the same time, Tim, Lex and Grant climb an electrified fence out of the park's animal zone and Tim is nearly killed upon the reactivation of the electricity.
Grant and the children head for the visitor's center; he leaves them alone in the kitchen while he reunites with Sattler and the others. Sony VAIO PCG-8161M Battery
However, the kids escape two stalking raptors before reuniting with Grant and Sattler. Lex is able to assist with getting the park's security systems working from the control room. Grant contacts Hammond and tells him to call the mainland for rescue, but the two raptors find the group and attack. Sony VAIO PCG-3C2M Battery
The group flees through a series of air ducts, only to be cornered in the entrance hall by the raptors, who prepare to strike. However, the Tyrannosaurus breaks into the main hall and attacks and kills the raptors, allowing the four to flee outside where they are rescued by Malcolm and Hammond. Sony VAIO PCG-5N2M Battery
Grant and Hammond agree not to endorse the park. As the survivors load into the helicopter, Hammond takes one last look at Jurassic Park before boarding the helicopter himself. Grant and Sattler happily watch outside the window as pelicans fly over the sea. Sony VAIO PCG-5P1M Battery
Michael Crichton originally conceived a screenplay about a graduate student who recreates a dinosaur; he continued to wrestle with his fascination with dinosaurs and cloning until he began writing the novel Jurassic Park.[3] Sony VAIO PCG-5S1M Battery
Even before publication, Spielberg learned of the novel in October 1989 while he and Crichton were discussing a screenplay that would become the television series ER.[4] Before the book was published, Crichton demanded a non-negotiable fee of $1.5 million as well as a substantial percentage of the gross. Sony VAIO PCG-9Z1M Battery
Warner Bros. and Tim Burton, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Richard Donner, and 20th Century Foxand Joe Dante bid for the rights,[4] but Universal eventually acquired them in May 1990 for Spielberg.[5] Universal paid Crichton a further $500,000 to adapt his own novel,[6] which he had finished by the time Spielberg was filming Hook. Sony VAIO PCG-7171M Battery
Crichton noted that because the book was "fairly long" his script only had about 10 to 20 percent of the novel's content; scenes were dropped for budgetary and practical reasons.[7] After completing Hook, Spielberg wanted to film Schindler's ListSony VAIO PCG-7186M Battery
Music Corporation of America (then the parent company of Universal Pictures) president Sid Sheinberg gave a green light to the film on one condition: that Spielberg make Jurassic Park first. Spielberg later said, "He knew that once I had directed Schindler I wouldn't be able to do Jurassic Park."[4] Sony VAIO PCG-81112M Battery
Spielberg hired Stan Winston to create the animatronic dinosaurs, Phil Tippett to create go motion dinosaurs for long shots, Michael Lantieri to supervise theon-set effects, and Dennis Muren to do the digital compositing. Paleontologist Jack Horner supervised the designs, to help fulfill Spielberg's desire to portray the dinosaurs as animals rather than monsters. Sony VAIO PCG-31311M Battery
Horner dismissed the raptors' flicking tongues in Tippett's early animatics,[8] complaining, "[The dinosaurs] have no way of doing that!" Taking Horner's advice, Spielberg insisted that Tippett take the tongues out.[9] Winston's department created fully detailed models of the dinosaurs before molding latex skins, which were fitted over complex robotics. Sony VAIO PCG-8152M Battery
Tippett created stop-motion animatics of major scenes, but, despite go motion's attempts at motion blurs, Spielberg still found the end results unsatisfactory in terms of working in a live-action feature film.[8] Sony VAIO VPCS13X9E/B battery
Animators Mark Dippe andSteve Williams went ahead in creating a computer-generated walk cycle for the T. rex skeleton and were approved to do more.[10] When Spielberg and Tippett saw an animatic of the T. rex chasing a herd of Gallimimus, Spielberg said, "You're out of a job," to which Tippett replied, "Don't you mean extinct?"[8] Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery
Spielberg later wrote both the animatic and his dialogue between him and Tippett into the script, as a conversation between Malcolm and Grant.[11] As George Lucas watched the demonstration alongside of them, his eyes began to tear up. "It was like one of those moments in history, Sony VAIO VPCS12V9E/B battery
like the invention of the light bulb or the first telephone call," he said. "A major gap had been crossed, and things were never going to be the same."[12] Although no go motion was used, Tippett and his animators were still used by the production for knowing how the dinosaurs should move correctly. Sony VAIO VPCF13M8E/B battery
Tippett acted as a consultant regarding dinosaur anatomy, and his stop motion animators were re-trained as computer animators.[8]
Malia Scotch Marmo began a script rewrite in October 1991 over a five-month period, merging Ian Malcolm with Alan Grant.[13] Sony VAIO VPCF13Z0E/B battery
Screenwriter David Koepp came on board afterward, starting afresh from Marmo's draft, and used Spielberg's idea of a cartoon shown to the visitors to remove much of the exposition that fills Crichton's novel.[14] Spielberg also excised a sub-plot of Procompsognathus escaping to the mainland and attacking young children, as he found it too horrific.[15] Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/L battery
This sub-plot would eventually be used as a prologue in the Spielberg-directed sequel, The Lost World. Hammond was changed from a ruthless businessman to a kindly old man, because Spielberg identified with Hammond's obsession with showmanship.[16] He also switched the characters of Tim and Lex; Sony VAIO VPCM13M1E/W battery
in the book, Tim is aged 11 and into computers, and Lex is only seven or eight and into sports. Spielberg did this because he wanted to work with the younger Joseph Mazzello, and it also allowed him to introduce the sub-plot of Lex's adolescent crush on Grant.[17] Koepp changed Grant's relationship with the children, Sony VAIO VPCF22M1E battery
making him hostile to them initially to allow for more character development.[4] Koepp also took the opportunity to cut out a major sequence from the book, for budgetary reasons, where the T. rex chases Grant and the children down a river before being tranquilized by Muldoon. Sony VAIO VPCF11M1E/H battery
This scene was revived in part in Jurassic Park III with the Spinosaurus replacing the T. rex.[14]
After 25 months of pre-production, filming began on August 24, 1992, on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi.[18] Sony VAIO VPCF13M0E/B battery
The three-week shoot involved various daytime exteriors.[5] On September 11, Hurricane Iniki passed directly over Kauaʻi, which caused the crew to lose a day of shooting.[19] Several of the storm scenes from the movie are actual footage shot during the hurricane. Sony VAIO VPCYB2M1E battery
The scheduled shoot of the Gallimimus chase was moved to Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu and one of the beginning scenes had to be created by digitally animating a still shot of scenery.[11] Additional scenes were filmed on the "forbidden island" of Niihau.[20] Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E battery
The crew moved back to mainland USA to shoot at Universal Studios's Stage 24 for scenes involving the raptors in the kitchen.[5] The crew also shot on Stage 23 for the scenes involving the power supply, before going on location to Red Rock Canyon for the Montana dig scenes.[21] Sony VAIO VPCY11M1E battery
The crew returned to Universal to shoot Grant's rescue of Tim, using a fifty-foot prop with hydraulic wheels for the car fall, and the Brachiosaurus encounter. The crew filmed scenes for the Park's labs and control room, which used animations for the computers lent from Silicon Graphics and Apple.[22] Sony VAIO VPCS12L9E/B battery
The crew moved to Warner Bros. Studios' Stage 16 to shoot the T. rex attack on the SUVs.[22] Shooting proved frustrating due to water soaking the foam rubber skin of the animatronic dinosaur.[23] The ripples in the glass of water caused by the T. rex's footsteps was inspired by Spielberg listening to Earth, Sony VAIO VPCF11S1E/B battery
Wind and Fire in his car, and the vibrations the bass rhythm caused. Lantieri was unsure of how to create the shot until the night before filming, when he put a glass of water on a guitar he was playing, which achieved the concentric circles in the water Spielberg wanted. The next morning, guitar strings were put inside the car and a man on the ground plucked the strings to achieve the effect.[24] Sony VAIO VPCYB3V1E/R Battery
Back at Universal, the crew filmed scenes with the Dilophosaurus on Stage 27. Finally, the shoot finished on Stage 12, with the climactic chases with the raptors in the Park's computer rooms and Visitor's Center.[25] Spielberg brought back the T. rexfor the climax, abandoning his original ending in which Sony VAIO VPCF23P1E Battery
Grant uses a platform machine to maneuver a raptor into a fossil tyrannosaur's jaws.[26] The film wrapped twelve days ahead of schedule on November 30,[5][27][28] and within days editor Michael Kahn had a rough cut ready, allowing Spielberg to go ahead with filmingSchindler's List.[29] Sony VAIO VPCF23N1E Battery
Special effects work continued on the film, with Tippett's unit adjusting to new technology with Dinosaur Input Devices:[30] models which fed information into the computers to allow themselves to animate the characters traditionally. In addition, they acted out scenes with the raptors and Gallimimus. Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/L Battery
As well as the computer-generated dinosaurs, ILM also created elements such as water splashing and digital face replacement for Ariana Richards' stunt double.[8] Compositing the dinosaurs onto the live action scenes took around an hour. Rendering the dinosaurs often took two to four hours per frame, Sony VAIO VPCY21S1E/G battery
and rendering the T. rex in the rain even took six hours per frame.[31] Spielberg monitored their progress from Poland during the filming of Schindler's List.[32] Composer John Williams began work on the score at the end of February, and it was conducted a month later by John Neufeld and Alexander Courage.[33] Sony VAIO VPCF24M1E battery
The sound effects crew, supervised byGeorge Lucas,[34] were finished by the end of April. Jurassic Park was finally completed on May 28, 1993.
Despite the title of the film referencing the Jurassic period, most of the dinosaurs featured did not exist until the Cretaceous period, HP 448007-001 battery
with the exception ofBrachiosaurus and Dilophosaurus, both of which lived in the Jurassic period.[35] The screenplay acknowledges this when Dr. Grant describes the ferocity of theVelociraptor to a young boy, saying "Try to imagine yourself in the Cretaceous period..." HP Pavilion DV7 battery
Tyrannosaurus is the anti-hero and, according to Spielberg, the reason he rewrote the ending for fear of disappointing the audience.[8] Before, a much less surprising ending was written in the script, where one of the raptors was shot dead and the other killed by a falling fossil. HP DV6-1120SA battery
Winston's animatronic T. rexstood 20 feet (6.1 m), weighed 13,000 pounds (5,900 kg),[22] and was 40 feet (12 m) long.[36] Jack Horner called it "the closest I've ever been to a live dinosaur".[36] The dinosaur is depicted with a vision system based on movement. HP DV6-1210SA battery
  • Its roar is a baby elephant mixed with a tiger and an alligator, and its breath is a whale's blow.[33] A dog attacking a rope toy was used for the sounds of it tearing a Gallimimus apart.[8]
Velociraptor also has a major role. One Raptor named "Big One" is portrayed as the primary antagonist. Compaq CQ50 battery
The animal's depiction was not based on the actual dinosaur genus in question (which itself was significantly smaller), rather the related (and larger) genus Deinonychus, which had been synonymised withVelociraptor by Gregory S. Paul in 1988.[37] HP Pavilion DV8 battery
Crichton's writing followed this, but by the time production of the film took place, the idea had been dropped by the scientific community. Coincidentally, before Jurassic Park's theatre release, the similar Utahraptor was discovered, though was proved bigger in appearance than the film's raptors; Sony VGP-BPS13 battery
this prompted Stan Winston to joke, "We made it, then they discovered it."[36] For the attack on character Robert Muldoon, the raptors were played by men in suits.[25] Dolphin screams, walruses bellowing, geese hissing, an African crane's mating call, HP DV9700 battery
and human rasps were mixed to formulate various raptor sounds.[8][33] Following discoveries made after the film's release, most paleontologists theorized that dromaeosaurs likeVelociraptor and Deinonychus had feathers. This feature is only included in Jurassic Park III.[38] Compaq CQ35-100 battery
Dilophosaurus was also very different from its real-life counterpart, made significantly smaller to make sure audiences did not confuse it with the raptors.[39] However, this was combated by Nedry, when he referred to the Dilophosaur as being a 'little one'. Sony VGP-BPS11 battery
  • Its neck frill and its ability to spit venom are fictitious. Its vocal sounds were made by combining a swan, a hawk, a howler monkey, and a rattlesnake.[8]
Brachiosaurus is the first dinosaur seen by the park's visitors. It is inaccurately depicted as chewing its food as well as standing up on its hind legs to browse among the high tree branches. HP Pavilion DV6 Battery
Despite scientific evidence of their having limited vocal capabilities, sound designer Gary Rydstrom decided to represent them with whale songs and donkey calls to give them a melodic sense of wonder. Penguins were also recorded to be used in the noises of the dinosaurs.[33] HP Pavilion DV6-1000ET Battery
Triceratops has an extended cameo, being sick with an unverified disease. Its appearance was a particular logistical nightmare for Stan Winston when Spielberg asked to shoot the animatronic of the sick creature earlier than expected.[40] Winston also created a baby Triceratops for Ariana Richards to ride, HP Pavilion DV6-1001TX Battery
  • which was cut from the film for pacing reasons.[41] The redundant Triceratops model was later used in Spielberg's 1997 sequel.
Gallimimus are featured in a stampede scene where one of them is devoured by the Tyrannosaurus. HP Pavilion DV6-1001XX Battery
  • Parasaurolophus appear in the background during the first encounter with the Brachiosaurus.
Distribution
Universal spent $65 million on the marketing campaign for Jurassic Park, making deals with 100 companies to market 1,000 products.[42] HP Pavilion DV6-1002TX Battery
These included threeJurassic Park video games by Sega and Ocean Software,[43] a toy line by Kenner that was distributed by Hasbro,[44] and a novelization aimed at young children.[45]The released soundtrack included unused material.[46] Trailers for the film only gave fleeting glimpses of the dinosaurs,[47] HP Pavilion DV6-1003TX Battery
a tactic journalist Josh Horowitz described as "that old Spielberg axiom of never revealing too much" when Spielberg and director Michael Bay did the same for their production of Transformers in 2007.[48] The film was marketed with the tagline "An Adventure 65 Million Years In The Making." HP Pavilion DV6-1004TX Battery
This was a joke Spielberg made on set about the genuine, thousands of years old mosquito in amber used for Hammond's walking stick.[49]
The film premiered at the National Building Museum on June 9, 1993, in Washington, D.C.,[50] in support of two children's charities.[51] HP Pavilion DV6-1005EA Battery
The film made its VHSand LaserDisc debut on October 4, 1994,[52] and was first released on DVD on October 10, 2000.[53] The film was also released in a package with The Lost World: Jurassic Park.[54] The DVD was re-released with both sequels on December 11, 2001,[55] as the Jurassic Park Trilogy, HP Pavilion DV6-1005EZ Battery
and as the Jurassic Park Adventure Pack on November 29, 2005.[56] The film was re-released in UK cinemas on September 23, 2011.[57] A Blu-ray release of the trilogy was released on October 25, 2011.[58] A 3-D version of the film is due to be released on July 19, 2013.[59]
Following the film's release, a traveling exhibition began.[60] HP Pavilion DV6-1005TX Battery
Steve Englehart wrote a series of comic books published by Topps Comics. They acted as a continuation of the film, consisting of the two-issue Raptor, the four-issue Raptors Attack and Raptors Hijack, and Return to Jurassic Park, which lasted nine issues. HP Pavilion DV6-1006TX Battery
All published issues were republished under the single title Jurassic Park Adventures in the United States and as Jurassic Park in the United Kingdom.[61] Ocean Software released a game sequel entitled Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues in 1994 on Super NES and Game Boy.[43] HP Pavilion DV6-1007TX Battery
Jurassic Park was broadcast on television for the first time on May 7, 1995, following the April 26 airing of The Making of Jurassic Park.[62] Some 68.12 million people tuned in to watch, garnering NBC a 36 percent share of all available viewers that night. HP Pavilion DV6-1008TX Battery
Jurassic Park was the highest-rated theatrical film broadcast on television by any network since the April 1987 airing of Trading Places.[63] In June–July 1995 the film was aired a number of times on the TNT network.[63]
"The Jurassic Park Ride" went into development in November 1990[64] HP Pavilion DV6-1009EL Battery

Jurassic Park was the highest grossing film released worldwide up to that time, HP Pavilion DV6-1010EA Battery
beating Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial which previously held the title (though it did not top E.T. in North America).[67] The film opened with $47 million in its first weekend[1] and had grossed $81.7 million by its first week.[68]The film stayed at number one for three weeks and eventually grossed $357 million in the U.S. and Canada.[69] HP Pavilion DV6-1010ED Battery
The film also did very well in international markets, breaking opening records in the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and Taiwan,[70] ultimately earning $914 million worldwide,[1] with Spielberg reportedly making over $250 million from the film.[71] Jurassic Park's worldwide gross was topped five years later by James Cameron's Titanic.[72] HP Pavilion DV6-1010ET Battery
Critical
The film was widely acclaimed. High praise was heaped on the visual effects, although there was some criticism leveled at departures from the book. Janet Maslinof The New York Times called it "a true movie milestone, HP Pavilion DV6-1010TX Battery
presenting awe- and fear-inspiring sights never before seen on the screen… On paper, this story is tailor-made for Mr. Spielberg's talents…[but] [i]t becomes less crisp on screen than it was on the page, with much of the enjoyable jargon either mumbled confusingly or otherwise thrown away."[73] HP Pavilion DV6-1011TX Battery
In Rolling Stone, Peter Travers described the film as "colossal entertainment—the eye-popping, mind-bending, kick-out-the-jams thrill ride of summer and probably the year [...] Compared with the dinos, the characters are dry bones, indeed. Crichton and co-screenwriter David Koepp have flattened them into nonentities on the trip from page to screen."[74] HP Pavilion DV6-1012TX Battery
Roger Ebert noted, "The movie delivers all too well on its promise to show us dinosaurs. We see them early and often, and they are indeed a triumph of special effects artistry, but the movie is lacking other qualities that it needs even more, such as a sense of awe and wonderment, and strong human story values."[75] HP Pavilion DV6-1013EA Battery
Henry Sheehan argued, "The complaints over Jurassic Park's lack of story and character sound a little off the point," pointing out the story arc of Grant learning to protect Hammond's grandchildren despite his initial dislike of them.[16]Empire magazine gave the film five stars, hailing it as "...quite simply one of the greatest blockbusters of all time."[76] HP Pavilion DV6-1013TX Battery
Rotten Tomatoes rated the film a "Certified Fresh" of 90%, with an average score of 7.6 out of 10, mostly from critics giving Jurassic Park a positive write-up with 90% of top critics being positive, and the site's consensus states "Jurassic Park is a spectacle of special effects and life-like animatronics, HP Pavilion DV6-1016EZ Battery
with some of Spielberg's best sequences of sustained awe and sheer terror since Jaws."[77]
In 1994, the film won all three Academy Awards it was nominated for: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing (at the same ceremony,Steven Spielberg, Michael Kahn, and John Williams took home Academy Awards for Schindler's List). HP Pavilion DV6-1018EL Battery
The film won honors outside of the U.S. including the 1994BAFTA for Best Special Effects, as well as the Award for the Public's Favorite Film.[78] It won the 1994 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation,[79] and the 1993 Saturn Awards for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Direction, Best Writing for Crichton and Koepp and Best Special Effects.[80] HP Pavilion DV6-1020EC Battery
The film won the 1993People's Choice Awards for Favorite All-Around Motion Picture.[81] Young Artist Awards were given to Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello, with the film winning an Outstanding Action/Adventure Family Motion Picture award.[82] The Chicago Film Critics Association rank Jurassic Park as the 55th scariest movie of all time. Legacy
The American Film Institute named Jurassic Park the 35th most thrilling film of all time on June 13, 2001,[83] and Bravo chose the scene in which Lex and Tim are stalked by two Raptors in the kitchen as the 95th scariest of all time in 2005.[84] HP Pavilion DV6-1020EI Battery
On Empire magazine's fifteenth anniversary in 2004, it judged Jurassic Parkthe sixth most influential film of the magazine's lifetime.[85] Empire called the first encounter with a Brachiosaurus the 28th most magical moment in cinema.[86] In 2008, an Empire poll of readers, HP Pavilion DV6-1020EJ Battery
filmmakers, and critics also rated it one of the 500 greatest films of all time.[87] On Film Review's fifty-fifth anniversary in 2005, it declared the film to be one of the five most important in the magazine's lifetime.[88] In 2006, IGN ranked Jurassic Park as the 19th greatest film franchise of all time.[89] HP Pavilion DV6-1020EK Battery
In a 2010 poll, the readers of Entertainment Weekly rated it the greatest summer movie of the previous 20 years.[90]
Most significantly, when many filmmakers saw Jurassic Park's use of computer-generated imagery, HP Pavilion DV6-1020EL Battery
they realized that many of their visions, previously thought unfeasible or too expensive, were now possible. Stanley Kubrick, the director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, contacted Spielberg to direct A.I. Artificial Intelligence.[85] Filmmaker Werner Herzog was similarly impressed, HP Pavilion DV6-1020EQ Battery
citing the movie as an example of Spielberg being a "great storyteller" and that he knows how to weave special effects into coherent stories.[91] George Lucas started to make the Star Wars prequels,[92] and Peter Jackson began to re-explore his childhood love of fantasy films, a path that led him to The Lord of the Rings and King Kong.[93] HP Pavilion DV6-1020ET Battery
Jurassic Park has also inspired films and documentaries such as the American adaptation of GodzillaCarnosaur, and Walking with Dinosaurs.[85] Stan Winston, enthusiastic about the new technology pioneered by the film, joined with IBM and director James Cameron to form a new special effects company, Digital Domain.[94] HP Pavilion DV6-1022EL Battery
Film historian Tom Shone commented on the film's innovation and influence, saying that "In its way, Jurassic Park heralded a revolution in movies as profound as the coming of sound in 1927."
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (also known as Jurassic Park II: HP Pavilion DV6-1023EF Battery
The Lost World or just Jurassic Park II) is a 1997 science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. The film was produced by Bonnie Curtis, Kathleen Kennedy, Gerald R. Molen and Colin Wilson. The screenplay was penned by David Koepp, loosely based on the 1995 novel The Lost World by Michael Crichton. HP Pavilion DV6-1023EM Battery
The film stars Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Schiff, Arliss Howard, Thomas F. Duffy, Vanessa Lee Chester, and Richard Attenborough.
The film picks up four years after the events of Jurassic Park. On a deserted island, dinosaurs have secretly survived and been allowed to roam free. HP Pavilion DV6-1025EF Battery
In the time between the two events, John Hammond loses control of his company, InGen, to his nephew Peter Ludlow. Ludlow assembles a team to bring the animals back to the mainland to bring in revenue and restore the company. Hammond sees a chance to redeem himself for his past mistakes and sends an expedition led by HP Pavilion DV6-1025EI Battery
Dr. Ian Malcolm to reach the island before InGen's team can get there. The two groups confront each other in the face of extreme danger and must team up for their own survival.
After the release of the original book and the success of the first film, Crichton was pressured not only by fans, but Spielberg himself, for a sequel novel. HP Pavilion DV6-1025EZ Battery
After the book was published in 1995, production began on a film sequel. The Lost World's' plot and imagery were made darker than that of the first in order to please fans. During its theatrical run, it grossed $618 million worldwide.

John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), having lost control of InGen to his unscrupulous nephew, Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard), as a result of the family's accident, summons Malcolm to his home and tells him about Isla Sorna, known as "Site B", where the dinosaurs were engineered and nurtured for a few months, HP Pavilion DV6-1030EC Battery
before being moved to Isla Nublar, the location of the park. He explains that after Jurassic Park was shut down, a hurricane destroyed the containment facilities on Isla Sorna, and the dinosaurs have been living free in the wild ever since. Hammond asks Malcolm to join a team that will travel to Site B to HP Pavilion DV6-1030ED Battery
document the dinosaurs in their natural habitat to rally public support and prevent Ludlow from exploiting the site for InGen and leave it as a nature preserve. Malcolm initially refuses, but agrees after learning that his girlfriend, paleontologist Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore), is part of the team and is already there, while the others will meet her after three days. HP Pavilion DV6-1030EF Battery
Malcolm meets the team of people he will join with: vehicle engineer Eddie Carr (Richard Schiff), and documentary producer Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn). Shortly after arriving on the island, they find Sarah and discover that Malcolm's adopted daughter, Kelly (Vanessa Lee Chester), has stowed away on the trailer. HP Pavilion DV6-1030EM Battery
Malcolm tries to get Kelly home, but they are interrupted by the arrival of an InGen team led by Ludlow, which they spot chasing and capturing several dinosaur species such as ParasaurolophusPachycephalosaurusGallimimus and Mamenchisaurus, for another park in San Diego. HP Pavilion DV6-1030EO Battery
Tracker Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite) wishes to hunt and kill an adult male Tyrannosaurus Rex by luring it to the cries of its injured offspring. That night, Nick and Sarah sneak into the InGen camp to free the dinosaurs, which cause a huge commotion as a Triceratops destroys the camp and the dinosaurs escape. HP Pavilion DV6-1030EQ Battery
During the commotion caused by the fleeing dinosaurs, Nick frees the baby Tyrannosaurus and takes it to the trailer so Sarah can set its broken leg. Malcolm takes Kelly to the high hide, a lift Eddie built to keep them safe above the trees. Malcolm, after trying and failing to contact the trailer via phone, returns on foot. Shortly after arriving, two adult Tyrannosaurs find the trailer and their baby. The team gives the infant back, but the two adults begin pushing the trailer over the cliff with the team inside. Eddie leaves Kelly in the "high hide" and returns to the trailer in one of the SUVs. HP Pavilion DV6-1038CA Battery
With the adults temporarily gone, Eddie is able to tie a rope to a tree trunk and send it down to Malcolm, Sarah, and Nick to grab onto. Eddie then ties a cable to the trailer to pull it back over the edge. He partially succeeds, but is attacked and eaten when the Tyrannosaurs return. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EB Battery
The trailer and the SUV fall off the cliff, but Malcolm, Sarah, and Nick are rescued by the InGen team. With both groups' communications equipment destroyed in the attacks, they team up to reach the old InGen compound's radio station.
At night, the Tyrannosaurs come across the group's camp. HP Pavilion DV6-1040ED Battery
As everyone flees from the female, Roland stays behind and manages to tranquilize the male rex twice. Many of the fleeing team, including Roland's hunting partner, Ajay Sidhu (Harvey Jason), pass through a field of tall grass near the compound, but are all killed by Velociraptors. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EI Battery
Shortly after, Nick, having found Ajay's bag with the coordinates, splits off from the group to reach the compound and radio for help. Sarah, Malcolm, and Kelly run for the compound, with three raptors in pursuit. After escaping from the three raptors, they reunite with Nick and fly away in a rescue helicopter. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EJ Battery
While flying away, they spot the caged Tyrannosaurus and Ludlow preparing to ship it and its baby back to the mainland.
A cargo ship carries the adult Tyrannosaurus back to the mainland, but crashes into the dock when it reaches San Diego. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EK Battery
Ludlow and several guards investigate the boat and find the entire crew dead. A guard opens the cargo hold, thinking there might be some crew members below, inadvertently releasing theTyrannosaurus, which escapes into the city. Realizing that the creature will likely come for its infant, Malcolm and Sarah learn from Ludlow that the infant is already at the park. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EL Battery
They rush to the park to get the baby and use it to lure the adult back to the boat. Ludlow tries to intervene, but is trapped in the cargo hold and devoured by the infant Tyrannosaurus. Malcolm and Sarah manage to tranquilize the adult before it can escape again and seal it in the hold. HP Pavilion DV6-1040EV Battery
The next day, Malcolm, Sarah and Kelly watch television reports of the cargo ship on its way back to Isla Sorna, surrounded by a convoy of naval vessels. During the program, they see an interview with Hammond, who explains that the American and Costa Rican governments HP Pavilion DV6-1040EZ Battery
have agreed to declare the island a nature preserveso the dinosaurs can live free of human interference, and adds "Life will find a way," paraphrasing something Malcolm told him on Isla Nublar four years earlier.
After the release of the novel Jurassic Park, HP Pavilion DV6-1042EL Battery
Michael Crichton was pressured by fans for a sequel novel. Having never written a sequel, he initially refused, until the success of the first film prompted Steven Spielberg himself to request one.[1] After the book was published in 1995, production on the sequel film began in September 1996. HP Pavilion DV6-1044EL Battery
he Lost World was filmed in Eureka, San Diego, Burbank, and Kauai. Although the ending takes place in San Diego, only one sequence is actually shot there, where the InGen helicopter flies over the wharf and banks towards the city. The other sequences were all shot in Burbank.[3] HP Pavilion DV6-1045EE Battery
Spielberg suggested the Tyrannosaurus rex attack through San Diego be added to the film story, inspired by a similar attack scene of a Brontosaurus in London in the 1925 film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World.[4] HP Pavilion DV6-1045EI Battery
Many elements from the original Jurassic Park novel that were not in the first film were used for The Lost World.[5] The opening sequence of a vacationing family's young daughter being attacked in Costa Rica by a group of Compsognathus was similar to the opening scene in the original novel, HP Pavilion DV6-1045EO Battery
and Dieter Stark's death is analogous to John Hammond's compy-related death in the novel. Also, Nick, Sarah, Kelly, and Burke being trapped behind a waterfall by one of the T. Rexes is taken from the first novel, where Tim and Lex are trapped behind a man-made waterfall with the T. rex attempting to eat them, HP Pavilion DV6-1045EZ Battery
and Roland Tembo shoots the T. rex with tranquilizer in the same way that Robert Muldoon did in the first book.
According to Jack Horner, part of the waterfall scene was written in as a favor for him by Spielberg. Burke greatly resembles Horner's rival Robert Bakker. HP Pavilion DV6-1046EL Battery
In real life Bakker argues for a predatory Tyrannosaurus while Horner views it as primarily a scavenger. So Spielberg wrote Burke into this part to have him killed by the Tyrannosaurus rex as a favor for Horner. After the film came out, Bakker, who recognized himself in Burke and loved it, actually sent Horner a message saying "See, I told you T. rex was a hunter!".[6] HP Pavilion DV6-1050EF Battery
Distribution
The Lost World: Jurassic Park was released on May 23, 1997. The film made its VHS and LaserDisc debut on November 4, 1997.[7] The DVD, first released on October 10, 2000, HP Pavilion DV6-1050EI Battery
includes deleted scenes involving Hammond's ouster from InGen that were incorporated into the Fox broadcast television premiere of the film. However, the deleted scenes are included separate of the actual movie, and are of lesser quality than the corresponding scenes from the broadcast version, despite being released some time after the broadcast. HP Pavilion DV6-1050EN Battery
The Blu-Ray version of the film released in 2011 also includes the deleted scenes, but they are now of even lesser quality than the DVD version. Universal Home Video, Amblin Entertainment and director Steven Spielberg have all declined comment on the matter. HP Pavilion DV6-1050EO Battery
The film was also released in a package with Jurassic Park.[8] The DVD has also been re-released with both sequels on December 11, 2001 as the Jurassic Park Trilogy[9] and as the Jurassic Park Adventure Pack on November 29, 2005.[10] The soundtrack was released on May 20, 1997. HP Pavilion DV6-1050EP Battery
On the same day it was first released to DVD, a deluxe limited edition box set was released that included Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, soundtracks for both films with packaging made exclusively for the set, two lenticulars, eight 8x10 stills (4 from each film), HP Pavilion DV6-1050ET Battery
and a certificate of authenticity signed by all three producers of the set, all inside a collector case.
Box office
Following four years of growing anticipation and hype, The Lost World: Jurassic Park broke many box office records upon its release. HP Pavilion DV6-1050US Battery
It took in $72,132,785 on its opening weekend ($92.6 million for the four-day Memorial Day holiday) in the U.S.,[12]which was the biggest opening weekend at the time,[13] surpassing the previous record-holder Batman Forever at $52.8 million. It held onto this record for four and a half years, until the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in November 2001. HP Pavilion DV6-1053CL Battery
The Lost World took the record for highest single-day box office take of $26,083,950 on May 25,[14] a record held until the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It also became the fastest film to pass the $100 million mark, achieving the feat in just six days.[15] HP Pavilion DV6-1055EE Battery
However, its total box office gross fell below the total of the original film.[16] With grossing $229,086,679 domestically and $389,552,320 internationally, the film ended up grossing $618,638,999 worldwide,[17] becoming the second highest grossing film of 1997 behind Titanic. Critical
The Lost World: Jurassic Park has a 52% "rotten" score with 33 out of 63 reviewers giving it a positive review.[18] It also has a 59/100 on Metacritic.[19] Roger Ebert, who gave the first film three stars, gave the film only two, writing that "It can be said that the creatures in this film transcend any visible signs of special effects and seem to walk the earth, HP Pavilion DV6-1058EL Battery
but the same realism isn't brought to the human characters, who are bound by plot conventions and action formulas." Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times saw improved character development over the original, saying, "It seemed such a mistake in Jurassic Park to sideline early on its most interesting character, HP Pavilion DV6-1060EL Battery
the brilliant, free-thinking and outspoken theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) with a broken leg, but in its most inspired stroke, The Lost World brings back Malcolm and places him front and center," calling it "a pleasure to watch such wily pros as Goldblum and Attenborough spar with each other with wit and assurance."[20] HP Pavilion DV6-1060EO Battery
The dinosaurs were even more developed as characters, with Stephen Holden of the New York Times saying, "The Lost World, unlike Jurassic Park, humanizes its monsters in a way that E.T. would understand."[21] Entertainment Weekly remarked in 2008, "Mr. T-Rex was cool in the first Spielberg flick, HP Pavilion DV6-1060ES Battery
sure, but it wasn't until [it was in] San Diego that things got crazy-cool. It's the old 'tree falling in the woods' conundrum: Unless your giant monster is causing massive property damage, can you really call it a giant monster?"[22] HP Pavilion DV6-1060EV Battery
Spielberg has confessed that during production he became increasingly disenchanted with the film, admitting, "I beat myself up... growing more and more impatient with myself... It made me wistful about doing a talking picture, because sometimes I got the feeling I was just making this big silent-roar movie... HP Pavilion DV6-1062EL Battery
I found myself saying, 'Is that all there is? It's not enough for me.'"[23]
The movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Visual Effects[24] and for "Best Action Sequence" in the MTV Movie Awards 1998 for the T. rex rampage throughSan Diego.[25] It was also nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, HP Pavilion DV6-1066EL Battery
Best Director, Best Young Actress for Vanessa Lee Chester, Best Special Effects, and Best Supporting Actor for Pete Postlethwaite.[26] However, it was also nominated for three Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Screenplay, Worst Remake or Sequel and Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property, but failed to win any of those prizes. Jurassic Park III is a 2001 American science fiction adventure film and the third of the Jurassic Park franchise. It is the only film in the series that is neither directed by Steven Spielberg (though produced by his production company,Amblin Entertainment) nor based on a book by Michael Crichton, HP Pavilion DV6-1070EO Battery
though numerous scenes in the movie were taken from Crichton's two books, Jurassic Park and The Lost World. The film takes place on Isla Sorna in the Central AmericanPacific coast, the island from the second film, after a divorced couple tricks Dr. Alan Grant into helping them find their son. HP Pavilion DV6-1080EL Battery
After the success of Jurassic Park, Joe Johnston asked Steven Spielberg if he could direct the film adaptation of The Lost World, the sequel to Jurassic Park. While Spielberg wanted to do the project, he promised to give the helm of the next sequel to Johnston, if there was to be one. HP Pavilion DV6-1080EQ Battery
Spielberg stayed involved with the film by becoming the executive producer. Three years after the release of The Lost World, production of the third film began in August 2000.
Eric Kirby (Trevor Morgan) and Ben Hildebrand (Mark Harelik), go parasailing off the restricted coast of Isla Sorna. HP Pavilion DV6-1080ES Battery
The men piloting their boat go missing, causing their boat to crash and them to glide towards the island.
Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) remained close since their incident at Isla Nublar but never married, with Sattler having married a lawyer named Mark Degler. HP Pavilion DV6-1090EO Battery
After dinner, Grant tells Sattler that recent research indicates that Velociraptors were far more intelligent than previously perceived. At Grant's excavation site at Fort Peck Lake, Grant's graduate school assistant Billy Brennan reveals a replica of a Velociraptor's larynx created from scanning a raptor skull. HP Pavilion DV6-1090ES Battery
Grant is approached by Paul (William H. Macy) and Amanda Kirby (Téa Leoni), owners of a corporation called Kirby Enterprises. They inform Grant that they wish to hire him to give them an aerial tour of Isla Sorna. He initially refuses, but is persuaded by their offer to fund his excavation. HP Pavilion DV6-1099EF Battery
The plane carrying Grant, Billy, the Kirbys, and three mercenaries arrives at Isla Sorna. Grant objects when he learns the team intends to land on the island, but is knocked unconscious by the mercenary Cooper (John Diehl). HP Pavilion DV6-1100EO Battery
Grant regains consciousness when he hears Amanda use a megaphone to call out to somebody in the jungle, which draws the attention of aSpinosaurus. The mercenaries usher the group onto the plane. The Spinosaurus attacks the plane, killing another mercenary, Nash. The survivors flee. They encounter a Tyrannosaurus, which chases them back to the Spinosaurus and the two dinosaurs fight and the Spinosaurus snaps the Tyrannosaurus's neck killing it, the survivors then flee. HP Pavilion DV6-1100SO Battery
Grant learns that the Kirbys are actually a divorced couple and owners of a small business. They are in search of their son Eric, who was stranded on the island along with Amanda's friend Ben Hildebrand eight weeks prior. The group heads towards the coast, in hopes of being rescued. They discover a parasail with Ben's corpse and a video camera containing footage from their crash.
The group comes across a derelict InGen laboratory. After exploring the compound, they are attacked by a Velociraptor, which "calls" for assistance. HP Pavilion DV6-1100SV Battery
Outside, they are pursued by a Velociraptor pack, which kills Udesky. Grant is separated, but is rescued by Eric. The group reunites after Eric hears the ringtone of his father's satellite phone, which is emanating from within the Spinosaurus that had attacked them at the runway. HP Pavilion DV6-1101AU Battery
Grant discovers that Billy stole two eggs from a raptor nest, in hopes of using them to fund their excavation. Grant berates Billy as being no better than InGen. Grant decides to store the eggs in his bag instead, reasoning that they could bargain with the raptors for the eggs, in exchange for their lives. HP Pavilion DV6-1101AX Battery
The group sets out for a boat docked at a nearby river. They pass through a Pteranodon's cage. Billy rescues Eric from the pterasaurs, but is viciously attacked and presumed dead. The group escapes onto a boat and while navigating down the river, the phone is heard from within Spinosaurus excrement and is recovered. HP Pavilion DV6-1101SO Battery
While Grant is calling Ellie for assistance, the Spinosaurus attacks them again. As the boat is capsizing, Grant is only able to get out the words, "Site B! The river!" Paul and Grant manage to drive away the Spinosaurus, but are unsure if Ellie will be able to send help.
The group is close to shore, when they are confronted by Velociraptors. HP Pavilion DV6-1101TU Battery
Grant delivers the eggs and uses Billy's raptor resonating chamber to communicate. On the beach, Marine helicopters and infantry arrive. The party boards the helicopter where they are reunited with Billy, who is still alive but seriously injured. As they depart, three Pteranodons fly off into the distance. HP Pavilion DV6-1101TX Battery
Joe Johnston had been interested in directing the sequel to Jurassic Park and approached friend Steven Spielberg about the project. While Spielberg wanted to direct the first sequel, he agreed that if there was ever a third film, Johnston could direct.[3] HP Pavilion DV6-1102AU Battery
The third film was greenlit in August 1999 and was based on a story by Steven Spielberg, featuring Alan Grant after having lived in a tree on one of the islands and studied the dinosaur population. Johnston never had any concrete concept for the third installment, other than stating the film would be "more stand-alone" and feature a lot of flying reptiles.[4] HP Pavilion DV6-1102AX Battery
Before that, Craig Rosenberg wrote a script involving teenagers who get marooned on Isla Sorna.[5]
New writers were brought in to scribe a story involving Pteranodons escaping from Site B and causing a rash of mysterious killings on the mainland, HP Pavilion DV6-1102TU Battery
which was to be investigated by Alan Grant and a number of other characters including Billy Brennan, a naturalist named Simone, a tough military attaché, and wealthy Paul Roby, his teenage son Miles, and love interest. Grant's group was to track the Pterosaurs back to Site B and crash on the island, while a parallel investigation was carried out on the mainland. HP Pavilion DV6-1102TX Battery
Supposedly, the aviary sequence and laboratory set piece were much longer and more complex, including raptors stealthily entering the hatchery while the team spent the night. Sets, costumes, and props were built for this version, before Johnston threw out the completed script five weeks before filming in order to pursue the "rescue mission" plot, HP Pavilion DV6-1103AU Battery
which was suggested by David Koepp.[3] Johnston said that the script was never finished during production - "We shot pages that eventually went into the final script but we didn't have a document".[5] Also during the pre-production phase, concept artists created advertising for the film using a number of working titles including HP Pavilion DV6-1103AX Battery
Jurassic Park: Extinction and Jurassic Park: Breakout.[6]
Production began on August 30, 2000[7] without a finished script, with filming in California, Oahu, and Molokai.[8] Although it is an original story, not based on a Michael Crichton novel, HP Pavilion DV6-1103EE Battery
it does contain minor scenes from Crichton's Jurassic Park and The Lost World novels that were not featured in the film versions, such as the Pteranodon aviary and the use of the boat. In a change from the first two films, Spinosaurus is considered the primary antagonist[9] As to whySpinosaurus was chosen for such a role, Johnston stated, HP Pavilion DV6-1103EI Battery
"A lot of dinosaurs have a very similar silhouette to the T-Rex... and we wanted the audience to instantly recognize this as something else."[10] The silhouette of "Spinosaurus" is also on the poster behind the "Pteranodon", taking the place of the "T. Rex" that was used in previous installment's posters. HP Pavilion DV6-1103EO Battery
Baryonyx was originally considered to be the "big bad" before Spinosaurus was chosen. Within film dialog, Billy interprets the animal encountered as a Baryonyx or Suchomimus, but Dr. Grant corrects his analysis based on its sail.[3] The origin of the Spinosaurus is also a mystery as Ingen did not clone the Spinosaurus. HP Pavilion DV6-1103TU Battery
The Spinosaurus in the film however is slightly inaccurate, particularly in the structure of its head and dentition, which more closely match that of Suchomimus than Spinosaurus. Additionally, the film perpetuates the error of its two predecessors with regards to the size of its Velociraptors; HP Pavilion DV6-1103TX Battery
they are roughly two to three times their actual size and much closer to the Deinonychus.
The special effects used for the dinosaurs are a mixture of animatronics and CGI. Due to new discoveries and theories in the field of paleontology, the portrayal of several dinosaurs differs from that of the previous two films. HP Pavilion DV6-1104AU Battery
Discoveries that suggest that Velociraptors were feathered prompted the addition of quill-like structures on the head and neck of male Velociraptors in the film. "We've found evidence that Velociraptors had feathers, or feather-like structures, and we've incorporated that into the new look of the raptor", said paleontologist Jack Horner, technical adviser on the film.[10]HP Pavilion DV6-1104AX Battery
The score, Don Davis, was recommended by the composer for the first two movies John Williams.[11] Williams' original themes were integrated into the score as well as several new ones written by Davis. A song by Randy Newman, "Big Hat, No Cattle", is also featured, appearing in the restaurant scene between Grant and the Kirby's. HP Pavilion DV6-1104TU Battery
The film earned $181,171,875 in the United States and $368,780,809 worldwide, was the eighth highest grossing film of the year worldwide,[2] but still earned less than either of its predecessors. As with the other films in the franchise, there was a large marketing push, including seven video games[13] and anovelization aimed at young children.[ HP Pavilion DV6-1104TX Battery
The film made its VHS and DVD debut on December 11, 2001.[15] The DVD has also been re-released with both sequels on December 11, 2001[16] as the Jurassic Park Trilogy, and as the Jurassic Park Adventure Pack on November 29, 2005.[17] The film has also been released alongsideHulk.[18] HP Pavilion DV6-1105AU Battery
The soundtrack was released on July 10, 2001.[19] A Blu-ray release of the film is only available via the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy (Blu-ray and DVD) which was released on October 25, 2011 by Universal Studios in North America.
Scott Ciencin wrote three children's books to tie-in with the film; HP Pavilion DV6-1105AX Battery
the first detailed the eight weeks Eric spent alone on Isla Sorna;[20] the second had Eric and Alan returning to Isla Sorna to rescue a group of teenage filmmakers;[21] and the last involved Eric and Alan leading the Pteranodons home after they nest in a Universal theme park. HP Pavilion DV6-1105EE Battery
Jurassic Park III holds a 50% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 157 reviews counted. The general consensus states that "The dinos are as cool as ever, but there's too much of a 'been there, done that' feel."[23] Worse yet it has a 29% rating among their Top Critics.[24] It also has a 42% on Metacritic.[25] HP Pavilion DV6-1105EI Battery
On both sites, it is the lowest rated film out of the Jurassic Park trilogy.
Empire magazine gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, commenting that it was "Short, scrappy and intermittently scary, this sequel skews young. It lacks the scale, the chills and the wonder of the original, but is more fun as a thrill ride than its sequel predecessor..."[26] HP Pavilion DV6-1105EO Battery
Some critics were also split over whether it was better or worse than the second film, but most reviews thought it was worse. Jeffrey Westhoff of the Northwest Herald felt so, remarking that "Johnston inherits the series one film too late."[27] Derek Elley of Variety Reviews felt likewise, HP Pavilion DV6-1105ES Battery
commenting that the third film was "an all-action, helter-skelter, don't-forget-to-buy-the-computer-game ride that makes the two previous installments look like models of classic filmmaking"[28] However, Ben Varkontine called it "not as good a ride as the first", but "better than the second."[29] HP Pavilion DV6-1105SL Battery
Much of the criticism was leveled at the plot as simply a chase movie with no character development, with some going so far as to say it was "almost the same as the first movie" with "no need for new ideas or even a script".[30] There were also complaints about its short length and small cast. On Ebert and RoeperHP Pavilion DV6-1105TU Battery
Richard Roeper gave it Thumbs Down while Roger Ebert awarded a Thumbs Up.[31] In a subsequent review, Ebert called it "the best blockbuster of the Summer".[32]
The movie was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and Best Special Effects.[33] HP Pavilion DV6-1105TX Battery
For its shortcomings, it was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for "Worst Remake or Sequel".[34] Although it was nominated for fewer Razzies than the previous film, it also became the first and only film in the series not to receive any Academy Award nominations. HP Pavilion DV6-1106AU Battery
In June 2002 director Steven Spielberg told Starlog magazine that he planned to produce Jurassic Park IV and that director Joe Johnston, who helmed Jurassic Park III, would direct. In November 2002 screenwriter William Monahan was hired to write,[19] with the film's release slated for summer 2005.[20] HP Pavilion DV6-1106AX Battery
In July 2003, Monahan completed the first draft, with the story no longer set in the jungle.[21] Actor Sam Neill said he was returning as Dr. Alan Grant, with filming expected to begin in 2004 in California and Hawaii.[22] In September 2004 screenwriter John Sayles was re-writing the script, with the film re-slated for a winter 2005 release.[23] HP Pavilion DV6-1106TX Battery
In October 2004 paleontologist Jack Horner said he would return as technical adviser for the fourth film as he had done for previous Jurassic Park films.[24] By April 2005 special effects artist Stan Winston explained that the delay in production was due to repeated revisions of the film's script, none of which satisfied Spielberg. HP Pavilion DV6-1107AU Battery
According to Winston, "He felt neither of [the drafts] balanced the science and adventure elements effectively. It's a tough compromise to reach, as too much science will make the movie too talky, but too much adventure will make it seem hollow."In March 2007 Laura Dern was asked to return for the new film, HP Pavilion DV6-1107AX Battery
which Universal still wanted to release by 2008.[27] Director Joe Johnston was also reported not to be directing the film.[28] Richard Attenborough has been contacted about reprising the role of John Hammond.[29] Jeff Goldblum has expressed some interest in reprising his role, of Ian Malcolm, for the fourth film.[30] HP Pavilion DV6-1107EL Battery
In December 2008 Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy were asked if there was any development on the sequel. Kennedy responded, "No... I don't know. You know, when Michael Crichton passed away, I sorta felt maybe that's it. Maybe that's a sign that we don't mess with it."[31] HP Pavilion DV6-1107TX Battery
While Marshall and Kennedy were no longer signed with Universal Pictures in a production capacity, the two will remain involved with the studio and its plans for Jurassic Park IV.[32] In November 2009Joe Johnston discussed the possibility of Jurassic Park IV, HP Pavilion DV6-1108AU Battery
stating that the story for the film is completely different from that of its predecessors and would take the franchise into a whole other trilogy.
Jurassic Park III director Joe Johnston revealed in an interview in January 2010 that Jurassic Park IV was set to be the beginning of a second Jurassic Parktrilogy.HP Pavilion DV6-1108AX Battery
He also added, “Jurassic Park IV is going to be unlike anything you’ve seen.”[36] Johnston says once he finishes Captain America, he hopefully will develop Jurassic Park IV with Steven Spielberg. Joe Johnston enthusiastically has confirmed the likelihood of the film's production more than once. HP Pavilion DV6-1108CA Battery
On June 15, 2011 it was reported that Steven Spielberg has been brainstorming with writer Mark Protosevich on a film that happens to be the fourth film in the franchise. It is unclear whether it is a reboot or the fourth installment of the original series. HP Pavilion DV6-1108TX Battery
During a new interview with Joe Johnston in July 2011, he stated that Jurassic Park IV was being discussed and would be a spin-off of the history of the first trilogy.[39]
At the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, Spielberg confirmed in front of at least 6,000 spectators that preparations for Jurassic Park IV were in progress, HP Pavilion DV6-1109AU Battery
with a story ready and a script being written. Spielberg said that it would be possibly released "within the next two or three years",[40][41] with a representative from Universal saying 2013 would be the preferred deadline for completion.[42]
In late October 2011 Jack Horner stated, "that a script has been written and is waiting to be transformed into a film".HP Pavilion DV6-1109AX Battery
He also said, "They've already brought dinosaurs back... so how could they make the dinosaurs scarier?", stating that it will be about genetic tampering.[43]
On October 26, 2011 Spielberg confirmed that the script was being written by Mark Protosevich, HP Pavilion DV6-1109TX Battery
that he hoped for it to be released "in the next couple of years" and that he felt the story they were working on was stronger than that of Jurassic Park III.[44]
In January 2012, Spielberg confirmed that he would not be directing the film, opting instead to be a producer.[45] HP Pavilion DV6-1110EC Battery
On June 21st 2012, it was confirmed that Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver would be scripting Jurassic Park IV.[46] Whether they will be continuing Mark Protosevich's script or creating a completely new script is unknown.
On July 2nd 2012, Frank Marshall responded to a question on Twitter which further confirmed that he will be producing Jurassic Park IV. HP Pavilion DV6-1110EG Battery
Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (known colloquially as JP:OG or JPOG) is a construction and management simulationvideo game for the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 based on the novel and film series Jurassic Park. The main point of the game is to recreate Jurassic Park - building a 5 star theme park with dinosaurs, HP Pavilion DV6-1110EH Battery
and turning John Hammond's dream into reality. In the park, the player builds paths, amenities for visitors such as, food and restrooms, as well as enclosures and attractions. One must also keep the park safe and secure. The park can be populated with up to sixty dinosaurs, with twenty-five different species available. HP Pavilion DV6-1110EJ Battery
The player can also add attractions similar to those seen in the film, such as the safari seen in the Jurassic Park film, and additional attractions like a balloon tour and several varieties of viewing platform.
You work for InGen.The player's main objective is simple: HP Pavilion DV6-1110EL Battery
create a theme park/zoo featuring dinosaurs, make it popular, and make it safe. The gameplay functions are very similar to the SimCity and Tycoon game models. It is necessary to build feeding stations where herbivores can get bales of plant feed, while carnivores are fed live cows or goats. HP Pavilion DV6-1110EO Battery
However, herbivores become unhappy if they don't have enough trees around them or enough nearby dinosaur friends to socialize with. Likewise, carnivores have an innate desire to hunt other dinosaurs, so even a constant stream of livestock will not keep them happy.[2] HP Pavilion DV6-1110EQ Battery
Players may also create dinosaurs; in order to create a dinosaur, a significant percentage of the particular dinosaur's DNA is needed. Fifty percent (50%) is needed in order to create a dinosaur; the higher the percentage of DNA, the longer that dinosaur will live unless it dies by means other than natural causes (which, in the game, is old age). HP Pavilion DV6-1110ES Battery
To gain a dinosaur's DNA, the player must extract it through fossils or amber, higher quality specimens mean that more DNA is extracted.
The player may also dig for fossils using a fossil hunting team to dig in one of the nine dig sites positioned around the world to obtain DNA. HP Pavilion DV6-1110ET Battery
There are various dig sites in wich the player may search for fossils and each dig site contains fossils from three certain dinosaurs and some of the dinosaurs, like Brachiosaurus, are available in more than one dig site. The chance of finding fossils in the site depends on the quality of the site. HP Pavilion DV6-1110EZ Battery
There are 6 classifications on the quality of a dig site. These classifications are excellent, good, average, mediocre, poor, and exhausted (exhausted sites are not truly empty, as it is still possible to find fossils, amber and gems there, but findings happen rarely and the fossils and amber are often low quality). HP Pavilion DV6-1110SS Battery
More dig teams can be purchased at increasing amounts of money. When a player's dig teams are excavating a site, they occasionally will come across various precious metals and stones which can be sold when collected and can help raise park funds. HP Pavilion DV6-1110TX Battery
Dinosaurs
Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis features twenty-five species of dinosaurs, including thirteen that appeared in at least one of the Jurassic Park films. Most of the dinosaurs, however, are based on their look and appearance in The Lost World: HP Pavilion DV6-1111TX Battery
Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III, even if they were in the 1st film. Each species has its own behavior. Each species is ranked using a star rating (1-5) based on their popularity with the virtual visitors, as well as grouped into one of four major categories based on size and diet: (N/A means it wasn't in any of the movies) HP Pavilion DV6-1112TX Battery
The least popular dinosaurs, ranging from 1-3 stars. They are common prey for predators (especially Dryosaurus, Gallimimus, and Homalocephale, which are defenseless), but Pachycephalosaurus, Styracosaurus, and Kentrosaurus will attack small carnivores with the exception of Albertosaurus, HP Pavilion DV6-1113TX Battery
whilst Kentrosaurus can also harm large carnivores by swinging its spiked tail, but at the same time attempts to flee. They like to live in large herds guarded by larger herbivores, but Kentrosaurus is shy and wary of very large herbivores such as the sauropods and especially hadrosaurs in the game, HP Pavilion DV6-1114TX Battery
but they like to socialize with Stegosaurus, since both dinosaurs are related. Pachycephalosaurus will compete with its own kind for dominance.
Medium-popular dinosaurs, ranging from 2-5 stars. They are challenging for small and large carnivores to take down. HP Pavilion DV6-1115EE Battery
Parasaurolophus, Corythosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Ouranosaurus, and Camarasaurus are defenseless, mostly relying on great numbers within their herds and speed. Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Torosaurus are able to defend themselves by using their tails or horns. HP Pavilion DV6-1115EI Battery
Brachiosaurus is the only herbivore that no carnivore can take down due to its large size. Triceratops is unusual because it will rampage when stressed, like the carnivores in the game. All large herbivores can live together peacefully, though Torosaurus will compete with its own kind for dominance. HP Pavilion DV6-1115ES Battery
Small carnivorous dinosaurs that ranges from 2-5 stars. These type of carnivores will attack all kinds of herbivores with the exception of Brachiosaurus, and some of the smaller carnivores will not attack Ankylosaurus. However, the Dilophosaurus (the weakest of the small carnivores) will only attack and kill small herbivores such as Dryosaurus, HP Pavilion DV6-1115ET Battery
Homalocephale, and Gallimimus and is unable to take down large or armored small herbivores. The other three carnivores will attack herbivores small and large. The Dilophosaurus can also stay near a Velociraptor pack to scavenge kills, as both species can tolerate each other. HP Pavilion DV6-1115EZ Battery
Velociraptor cannot attack Ankylosaurus, and both Dilophosaurus and Velociraptor will run away from Brachiosaurus. Ceratosaurus will become cannibalistic if there is no other food available, and Albertosaurus will take down its own kind if one of them is diseased or sick. HP Pavilion DV6-1115TX Battery
The downside of this dinosaur type is that they become easily stressed, an easy choice of prey for large carnivores, and can be killed by aggressive herbivores with just one attack, except for Albertosaurus and Ceratosaurus. Ceratosaurus is the only small carnivore that does not fear Allosaurus. HP Pavilion DV6-1116EL Battery
Unlike the other small carnivores, Velociraptor will rampage when stressed, like the large carnivores do. When rampaging, they will kill other Velociraptors, as well as Ceratosaurus and Dilophosaurus.
Large carnivorous dinosaurs are the most popular dinosaurs that ranges from 4-5 stars. HP Pavilion DV6-1116TX Battery
These carnivores, like their smaller relatives, will attack most kinds of herbivore, except Brachiosaurus. Usually they will attack their favored prey, if it is available. Large carnivores fight for territory when they meet, and when stressed, tend to rampage. When Spinosaurus challenge other carnivores for territory, HP Pavilion DV6-1117EL Battery
they will not run away if they lose, which is why groups of Spinosaurus will tolerate each other. Surprisingly, Carcharodontosaurus, Allosaurus, and Acrocanthosaurus will not fight members of their species unless they're stressed, meaning they can live in groups, although Acrocanthosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus will hunt Allosaurus as food. HP Pavilion DV6-1117ES Battery
Also, if a Carcharodontosaurs and Acrocanthosaurus are together, they treat each other with respect and will even share the same kill. Since Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus are the most dangerous and territorial of all the carnivorous dinosaurs, they can only be kept alone, and will kill or fight any other dinosaurs that they see, including their own kind. HP Pavilion DV6-1117TX Battery
Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus are also able to do a "Death Duel" against each other, with one of them being killed by the other in the end of the duel.
Scrapped dinosaurs
Compsognathus, a major feature in the franchise is sadly absent presumably due to its very small size which would have created tremendous gameplay problems. HP Pavilion DV6-1118EL Battery
Other species missing include two that were shown as embryo species in cold storage in the first film; Metriacanthosaurus and Proceratosaurus, and two others from the Jurassic Park films; Mamenchisaurus and Pteranodon were absent, the latter alongside any flying reptiles and aviaries. HP Pavilion DV6-1118TX Battery
Plans for marine reptiles also never made it to fruition. Three dinosaurs seen on the park map in the film, BaryonyxHerrerasaurus, and Segisaurus are also missing, although the first was originally to appear in the game.
After all the missions are completed, HP Pavilion DV6-1119EL Battery
a Site B option unlocks on the title page which allows the player to build an island without any fences or buildings for people, and no visitors are allowed (meaning no security buildings or ranger stations). Site B was designed to be more like Isla Sorna in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. HP Pavilion DV6-1119TX Battery
In it, the player gets to place eight hatcheries and up to sixty dinosaurs (same as the park setting unless modded). The dinosaurs will be created and live out their lives on your island without diseases or the possibility of becoming stressed. Weather is not a factor because you don't really need to protect or nurture the dinosaurs during a heatwave or a tornado; HP Pavilion DV6-1120EC Battery
as long as they have food, water and living space, the player can sit back and watch.
Attractions
Attractions help make the park popular, and increase its rating power and income when correctly configured. Attractions must be researched before they can be constructed, HP Pavilion DV6-1120EF Battery
and include the Balloon Tour, Safari Adventure and Viewing Dome (The Viewing Vents and Viewing Platforms do not need to be researched.) The Safari Tour and Balloon Tour attractions also allow for the player to "take over" the ride for the purpose of park exploration and photography. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EG Battery
The player may also observe the dinosaurs from the Viewing Dome, Viewing Vent, and Viewing Platform by selecting the "View" option after clicking on the building.
Fan Modification
Thanks to the PC version's modular file structure, the game is very easy to modify with nothing more than a regular text editor. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EH Battery
It is possible to create almost completely new missions, exercises, dinosaurs, and play options. They can also edit the TML and DDS file to make a different "skin" of the Dinosaurs and Visitors. Most skins are done on Dinosaurs. Most packs and projects include skins. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EI Battery
A popular modification is a Tyrannosaurus skin edit, used to create a so-called super T-Rex known as Crusher.
Thanks to this open ended design, a small community of fans have come together to work to improve realism, unlock unreleased features, and design new things to be included. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EJ Battery
A group of people have formed the Community Expansion Project and the Genesis Expansion Project, which takes previous modifications, and designs new ones for release in a patch for the overall community. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EK Battery
The team's main aim is to recreate the dinosaurs to be as realistic as possible, mainly expanding and creating new behavior.[3] Two other modification sets are Jurassic Park Legacy's the Film-Canon Mod and Novel-Canon Mod. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EL Battery
The "NCM" includes novel-based dinosaur skins and islands. The "FCM" includes film-based dinosaur skins, music, sounds, and islands. HP Pavilion DV6-1120EO Battery,HP Pavilion DV6-1120EQ Battery,HP Pavilion DV6-1120ER Battery
